Shell Hydrogen sees the way to 'the Hydrogen Economy.'

There’s a lot of hype about “the hydrogen economy” these days. But PR alone doesn’t account for the immense interest in hydrogen to fuel our future. The fact is hydrogen has many benefits that western economies want and need: reduced greenhouse gas emissions; less dependence on foreign oil; and cleaner air in our cities.
The benefits are potentially huge, and that has governments, industry, and consumers all looking to help move the introduction of fuel cells and hydrogen power forward.
No matter which end of the process you approach the issue from – a fuel supplier like Shell, a vehicle manufacturers like Daimler-Chrysler, or a fuel cell developer like Astris Energi, the outlook is starting to appear similar: Fuel cells in general, and hydrogen in particular, are starting to have real appeal at both the consumer and producer ends of the supply chain.
The average fuel economy of new 2000 passenger vehicles in the U.S. languished at 24 mpg, the lowest level since 1980, while at the same time average vehicle weight was increasing. Combine these statistics with rising oil prices, and consumers are understandably demanding alternatives. So much so that GM and DaimlerChrysler have just teamed up as late entrants into the hybrid vehicle market. Hybrids can be seen as an intermediate step towards a full hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, and one that is becoming increasingly popular. Analysts expect hybrid sales to grow from 80 thousand this year to 470 thousand by 2007.
Shell Hydrogen CEO Jeremy Bentham looks further down the road. “If we look out to 2020, we imagine by that time a modest 5-10 million hydrogen vehicles on the road, but that could continue growing rapidly until it’s 50 percent of vehicles sold by the middle part of this century.”
Something people don’t necessary appreciate,” he says, “is that the only really NEW thing here is seeing hydrogen as a fuel for a cell. Hydrogen itself is a very familiar substance!” Shell produces tonnes of the stuff every year, and uses it to make cleaner gasoline, amongst other things. "To expedite the transition of our transportation system away from petroleum fuels, and towards hydrogen fuel and vehicles, experts point to the crucial need for a hydrogen fueling infrastructure and the necessary leadership to make it a reality," said California’s EPA Secretary Terry Tamminen at the opening of California’s first hydrogen fueling station earlier this year.
California is moving ahead to create an early network of 150 to 200 hydrogen-fueling stations throughout the State, whose cost of approximately $90 000 000 will be borne by a consortium of interested groups. By 2010, it is hoped the “ Hydrogen Highway ” will stretch all the way to the winter Olympics in Whistler, British Columbia .
Bentham sees such ‘lighthouse projects,’ along with Shell’s recent opening of a fueling station in Washington in partnership with GM, as essential to the future of the hydrogen economy. “It’s important for people to see hydrogen in action.”
Washington thinks so too, leading President Bush to create the Freedom Fuel initiative, which will include $720 000 000 in new funding over the next five years to develop the technologies and infrastructure to produce, store, and distribute hydrogen for use in fuel cell vehicles and electricity generation. Combined with the FreedomCAR initiative, the President is proposing a total of $1.7 billion over the next five years to develop hydrogen-powered fuel cells, hydrogen infrastructure and advanced automotive technologies.
Not everyone thinks hydrogen is the way to go on fuel cell development, however. “Even with aggressive research, the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle will not be better than the diesel hybrid in terms of total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 2020,” says a study by MIT's Laboratory for Energy and the Environment .
Asked what technology he sees being dominant, Shell’s Bentham replied: “Clearly, tech developments are going on in all fields. In terms of the transport and auto field, the PEM fuel cell is the dominant technology, with its characteristics of quick start up and acceleration. If we look towards the stationary-type applications, the most efficient are going to be the high-temperature cells with the potential for being high-durability. There is a lot of talk about Solid Oxide technologies, and obviously that is one tech that we watch carefully.”
Astris Energi Inc. who are marketing a low-temperature AFC they developed with considerably lower material and operating costs than other fuel cells in its class, agrees that today hi-temp cells make the most sense for continuous heat power applications. ‘’If we look at applications that require quick startup, however - such as backup power, UPS , or the eventual use in transportation applications, our AFC makes far more sense because of its instant start up time versus hours for the hi-temp cells, as well as the much more favorable economics.‘’ says Peter Nor, Astris’ VP of Corporate Development.
To have hydrogen where you need it, when you need, is one of the biggest challenges in the progression towards a hydrogen economy. Alternate Energy Corporation has a stand-alone unit whose chemical process creates hydrogen locally, and can deliver just the amount needed to run an Astris E8 generator. AEC is currently packaging the two units together to sell starting next year.
So the dominant fuel cell technologies are still to be determined. Like the battle between VHS and Beta videotapes, the most efficient technology does not always win out. Issues of distribution and public acceptance always play significant roles. So where hydrogen and fuel cells in general are going to fit in tomorrow’s society is still up in the air.
“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” says Bentham. “But we are well past the starting line, and we see hydrogen as part of the Shell family of fuels alongside cleaner traditional fuels.”

The direct injection of petrol at high pressure
This allows a high specific power output to be achieved with low fuel consumption and low emissions.
The «overboost» system. This permits a temporary increasing of the torque value of 240 Nm to 260 Nm, in the top three gears.
The Twin-Scroll turbocharger, fitted for the first time on the THP 150 bhp engine
This pairs («twin») the exhaust gases of two cylinders in the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger. The two gas flows are then directed through «scrolls» in the turbocharger body.
The Variable Valve Timing for the inlet camshaft and the roller cam followers, reducing friction. This helps to achieve the high power and torque output while assisting in reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
The flow controlled oil pump
This provides the exact volume of oil necessary and therefore does not absorb unnecessary power from the engine reducing fuel consumption.

Suspensions The road holding of the 207 SW RC benefits from the excellent rigidity of the 207 structure, its highly effective and precise suspension and the efficient electric power steering.The characteristics of the suspension and steering are specific to the 207 SW RC.It is inspired by the 207 RC and shares the same wheels and 205/45R17 Bridgestone Potenza tyres, the shock absorber settings and steering geometry but has numerous special features to take into account the new body type, the possible increased load on the rear axle and also the customer’s expectations of this body type – in terms of comfort in particular.The front suspension dispenses with normal bushes in favour of uprated flexible mountings, the rear suspension has a torsion beam adapted to the new weight and therefore is not as stiff as that of the RC hatchback, and the suspension springs are also softer.This specification and the finely tuned design have allowed the 207 SW RC to provide a high level of primary safety.Braking is provided by 302 x 26 mm ventilated discs at the front and 249 x 9 mm at the rear.
The 207 SW RC is fitted as standard with ESP (electronic stability programme) incorporating SSP (steering stability program) which links the ESP and the electric power steering. This function reduces the braking distance on surfaces offering different grip levels while maintaining the stability of the vehicle.It was decided that the sporty nature of the 207 SW RC should be less «radical» than that of the hatchback, therefore the traction control and stability control functions of the ESP can be deactivated temporarily but, will reactivate automatically once the vehicle reaches a speed greater than 30 mph (50 km/h).

Safety Protected by a strong structure which has been designed to absorb and dissipate impact forces, the five occupants will also benefit from a complete range of safety systems with, in particular, six air bags, five seat belts with an audible / visual seat belt not fastened and unfastened warning system, two Isofix mountings and rear head restraints designed to minimise «whiplash» in the event of a rear impact.The 207 SW RC also benefits from automatic locking of the doors when the vehicle reaches a speed of 6 mph (10 km/h).The passenger compartmentThe sporty nature is clearly felt in the passenger compartment with certain features borrowed from the 207 RC:

It's one of the toughest decisions any parent faces, especially in this season when cars are given as graduation gifts.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. They key reason? Lack of experience behind the wheel, the institute found in a 2006 study.
This takes the choice far beyond simple teen preferences or whether Dad should pass his car on to his daughter and get the new one he's been eyeing.
Experts such as Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Consumer Reports recommend a passenger car as a teen's first vehicle, since these vehicles have predictable handling in emergency situations. Also, they advise, steer clear of SUVs and pickups, which are prone to roll over in emergency situations due to their higher centers of gravity; and sports cars, since some teens will be too tempted to test their performance.
"They don't know how to control all that power," says Sgt. Larry Montgomery of the Virginia State Police in Virginia Beach.
Consumer Reports magazine suggests a vehicle with sufficient engine power, with 0-60 mph time between 8 and 11 seconds.
In general, larger, heavier cars have proven safer than smaller, lighter ones in a crash. Montgomery admits that size matters when it comes to a crash. But larger vehicles may be more expensive to maintain and clumsy to maneuver. He also says that the larger heavier cars of the 1970s and 1980s, made with thicker steel and larger bumpers, don't offer safety features commonly found today.

Only one is known to have been recovered.City police said Sunday that the most recent theft was reported Friday by a woman in her mid-20s, who said her sky-blue Bentley Continental was taken overnight from a parking space near her apartment building in central Moscow. She valued the car at $340,000, police said.Also in the past week, police said a Bentley Continental was stolen from Olympic gold medalist Vladimir Zhmudsky, who played on the winning water polo team at the 1972 Summer Games.In 2003, Bentley opened its first showroom in Moscow and sold 40 cars that year. In separate announcements, both Ricardo, a European automotive engineering firm, and Nissan recently announced that they are developing diesel engines that meet emissions standards that match the Toyota Prius. Does this mean that diesel vehicles are finally worthy of the "clean diesel" label?
Not quite yet, but apparently the time is coming closer. Neither company is saying when—or even if—Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle diesels will enter production. California’s SULEV standard is an impressive goal, but the more immediate goal is for diesels to meet federal Tier 2, Bin 5 standard (T2B5).
Today, there is one diesel car and five diesel SUVs sold in the United States that meet the EPA’s less stringent Tier 2 Bin 8 (T2B8) emissions requirement. That means today’s diesels are still dirty enough to outlaw their sale in five states.

Should Americans demand that their fuel dollars buy a season-neutral measure of energy, like our Canadian neighbors?
It might not surprise you that the people who brought you refinery shutdowns during supply crunches are resisting the use of a device that would make it so. In an era of record profits, Big Oil doesn't want you to know how many molecules go into your tank.
As reported by Brian Beutler in Alternet:
A gallon of gasoline contains a certain number of molecules, which combust in your car's engine to provide it with energy. If you heat up that gallon of gasoline it will expand, leaving you with a larger volume of gas than the gallon with which you started. But your new volume will contain the same number of combustible molecules and therefore will provide the same amount of energy as it did prior to the heating. That means a tank full of "hot" gas will provide a car with less energy than will the same tank full of "cool" gas, which is why you've probably been advised (correctly) not to buy gasoline when it's hot outside. Simple, right?
It is if you live in Canada, at least. There, gasoline retailers install metering systems in their pumps to determine how much the fuel they sell has cooled or heated from its standardized refinery temperature, and then adjust the price accordingly. If the fuel has become warmer, it also becomes cheaper. If it has cooled, it becomes more expensive. Which is to say that Canadians -- to a greater extent than Americans -- pay for the energy they get out of the gasoline and not for the volume of liquid fuel they purchase.
Maybe we should be glad that summer heat literally inflates gasoline. Higher gas prices (adjusted for a mythical "driving season"), in combination with this physical phenomenon, could help some drivers reconsider fuel economy. After all, summer is when air pollution intensifies as heat keeps exhaust-produced ozone at ground level.
But wait. Beutler goes on to point out that:
The idea of correcting price for temperature has deep roots in the industry: oil companies have done so for gasoline wholesalers for nearly a century. The only ones in the North American energy chain who pay by volume rather than by energy value are U.S. consumers.
Two or three cents a tank certainly doesn’t matter to an individual consumer. But it adds up to $2 billion a year for the oil companies. If they don’t want to bother with the thingamajig that adjusts price for temperature-related expansion, don’t force them to. Simply have them pay those monies directly into a fund dedicated to rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure—or better yet, redesigning the infrastructure for the kind of mass transit, bicycle, and pedestrian travel that contributes to reduced emissions and less dependence on fossil fuel

Battle of the Plug-ins

Last week we heard about Toyota's road-ready plug-in hybrid. It uses nickel-metal hydride batteries (just like the current Prius, only twice the battery) and can travel around eight miles on a charge without using gasoline.
Last January we heard about GM's concept plug-in hybrid car, the Chevrolet Volt. But lest you get too excited over Toyota's efforts and forget about our homegrown plug-in, GM has people talking to reporters about it again.
Here's what GM's "people" told Bloomberg:
Toyota Motor Corp.'s plug-in electric car may have less than half the range of a competing vehicle planned by General Motors Corp., people with knowledge of both companies' development programs said.
GM wants its Chevrolet Volt to travel at least 40 miles after being charged at a normal household outlet, while the Toyota model may go no more than 20 miles on a single charge, said the people, who asked not to be identified because details of the plans are still secret.
It's certainly good to see that GM's taking this project seriously. But just because the company wants its car to travel 40 miles on a charge doesn't mean it will. By GM's own admission, lithium-ion battery technology must greatly improve before the Volt can hit the road. And it's Toyota, not GM, that's ready for real-world testing.
Perhaps Toyota's modest eight-mile electric range isn't so bad after all. Especially if it hits the road first.

A Stumble in the Race for Lithium-ion Batteries

Battery woes will slow the launch of a planned super-efficient Toyota Prius, also delaying the automaker’s hybrid options for full-size trucks and SUVs like Tundra and Sequoia. For a lithium-ion Prius, Toyota is now looking at 2010 or 2011. The flagship hybrid’s redesign will still debut in 2009, but with updated nickel-metal hydride batteries.
Why the delay? Visions of fiery laptops might have something to do with it. The lithium cobalt oxide batteries Toyota is developing have chemistry similar to those Sony used in its recalled computer batteries. Toyota wants to be certain that its battery technology is safe before installing it in hundreds of thousands of vehicles.
As reported in the Wall Street Journal, GM may benefit from Toyota’s difficulties:
GM is counting on a different kind of lithium-ion technology. A123 Systems, a Watertown, Mass., start-up that has come up with a lithium-ion battery based on iron phosphates, which it says is more chemically stable than others, is one of a handful of likely candidates to supply lithium-ion batteries to GM.
A senior Toyota executive said the timing for the launch of Toyota's first lithium-ion-battery hybrid model is close to being finalized, though the company's medium-term hybrid plan is "still very, very fluid in some aspects." The executive said the lithium-ion Prius will most likely hit the market in early 2011 but that there is a force within Toyota's engineering and product-development division that is insisting on launching the model by the end of 2010. In that case, it could be a horse race between Toyota and GM.
GM hopes to leapfrog Toyota with its own plug-in hybrid Volt, which could offer the possibility of different internal-combustion engines paired with lithium-ion batteries. And Honda is stealthily working on super-efficient diesel powertrains as well.
This is one horse race it will be impossible to miss—and one that may prove to be decisive in the future of sustainable transportation.

The Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1, to give it its full title, comes exclusively with black exterior paint and a black interior finished in Alcantara and leather. In a nod to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche's Porsche Design Chronograph 1 watch of 35 years ago, the instrumentation in the Cayman S Design Edition 1 echoes Porsche Design's chronograph style.Porsche will build just 777 of the special Cayman S, which along with the black makeover come with a number of technical changes and accessories. 20,000-mile trek from Brazil to New York came to its epic conclusion as two Ferrari 599 GTB Fioranos crossed the finish line at the New York Stock Exchange.
The Panamerican 20,000 was the latest and most comprehensive test of Ferrari's new 599 GTB Fiorano. On an often grueling 15-leg journey, a herd of 48 journalists took turns driving a brace of 599s from Belo Horizonte in Brazil to the Argentinian pampa; over Andean plateaus and through mountain passes some 13,000 feet above sea level; through the Central American tropics and across Mexico and the United States, with a stop in deepest, darkest Canada before reaching the final destination (our participation was featured in the February 2007 issue). Having made it over the rugged Andean roads with minimal damage to tires and rims, all the cars needed were regular oil changes.
This is not the first time Ferrari has embarked upon this type of journey. In 1997, it sent the F355 model on a tour around the world. In 2005, two 612 Scagliettis made a tour of China. We can't help but wonder what's next. Rallying the moon, perhaps?

The Live Earth concerts on July 7, 2007, in which smart was involved as an international partner, thrilled more than two billion people around the globe. Listeners all over the world were able to experience the live concerts, which were staged for 24 hours on behalf of climate protection, either live or via TV, Internet or radio. smart supported the concert series by providing the official shuttle service for the musicians. All of the musicians, including Madonna, Sting, Phil Collins, and Shakira, used their public appearances to declare their commitment to climate protection and chose extremely climate-friendly modes of transport to get to their respective concerts.

As a global partner of Live Earth, smart operated the official shuttle service for all of the musicians appearing at the eight concerts, which were staged on all continents. The international stars were transported in the smart fortwo and were thus able to see for themselves that an easy and comfortable ride is not dependent on vehicle size. The transport fleet also included low-emission Mercedes-Benz E-Class models fueled with biodiesel, SunDiesel, and natural gas, as well as the world's cleanest diesel vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz E 320 BLUETEC.

On behalf of climate protection projects, numerous celebrities in New York, London, and Hamburg autographed a white and silver smart fortwo in each city. The smart in Hamburg, for example, was autographed by Snoop Dogg, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Katie Melua, Jan Delay, Sasha, Juli, Roger Cicero, Mando Diao, Silbermond, Stefan Gwildis, Maria Mena, Revolverheld, Mia, Chris Cornell, Michael Mittermaier, Reamonn, Samy Deluxe, Jasmin Wagner and many others. From today until July 13, it will be auctioned off on eBay, with the proceeds going to the Save Our Selves – SOS initiative spearheaded by Al Gore and Kevin Wall.

The spectators at the concerts also showed tremendous interest in ecological driving. The smart stages in Hamburg and London became central information hubs for many spectators, where they could find out more about transportation and environmental issues.

The musicians were also enthusiastic about the relaxed atmosphere of the official catering service set up exclusively for them in Hamburg, the smart kitchen. There, Tim Mдlzer and the "Rote Gourmet Fraktion" cooked unusual culinary delicacies for the stars, giving them the opportunity to get to know the smart brand backstage as well.

With the development of the world's smallest direct-injection diesel engine, smart has produced a masterpiece of engine development that earns the new smart fortwo cdi the distinction of the world's most economical production car with combustion drive. The 33 kW/45 bhp two-door car consumes just 3.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC), which means that it can travel approximately 1000 kilometres without refuelling. Emitting just 88 grams of CO2 per kilometre, the smart fortwo diesel is the world champion in low CO2 emissions.State-of-the-art common-rail direct injection enables a combustion process that is even more efficient than that of the well-proven cdi engine from the pre-decessor model . High injection pressure of up to 1600 bar (previously 1350 bar) is built up, even at low revs, and the fuel is injected into the combustion chambers with newly developed seven-hole injectors. The power and torque have each improved by 10 percent. At the same time, fuel consumption is reduced by 13 percent. Depending on the driving situation and engine load, up to 60 percent of the previously cooled exhaust gases are returned to the combustion chambers.

Like the CDI engines of its sister brand Mercedes-Benz, fuel injection in the smart fortwo cdi is carried out in two phases: a few milliseconds before the main injection a small quantity of diesel is injected into the combustion chambers where it ignites and preheats the cylinders. This results in a noticeably quieter combustion noise level than an engine without this pilot injection. The electronic "brain" of the cdi engine – a high-performance micro-computer that controls the whole engine system – calculates how much fuel is needed and the interval at which pilot injection and main injection take place.The quick response of the cdi engine is first and foremost thanks to the compact yet extremely effective turbocharger that is housed in the exhaust manifold. Its compressor wheel has a diameter of just 33 millimetres, yet it rotates at up to 280,000 rpm and thus builds up maximum charge pressure of approximately 1200 millibars. This gives the three-cylinder engine more air to "breathe" and enables it to develop impressive torque, even at low revs: 85 metres are available even from 1500 rpm – more than three quarters of the maximum torque.This torque curve plays an important part in the fun behind the wheel that drivers experience with every kilometre driven in a smart fortwo cdi. The new smart fortwo cdi accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 19.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 135 km/h. It therefore offers a combination of agility, economy and environmental compatibility that is unique in this class.

Spy photographers have caught the new Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale on the streets of Maranello. In Ferrari-speak, Challenge Stradale means less weight—about 220 lbs. less—and more power. Much of that weight is shed inside, where carbon fiber is used extensively—notice the shot of the carbon-fiber interior door panel. Magnesium wheels also shed a few pounds. An additional 30 horsepower or so puts the F430 CS around 520, bumping the power-to-weight ratio from 6.9 lbs/hp for a regular F430 to just 6. That places the Challenge Stradale ahead of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 against which we tested a ”regular” F430 back in September, although the Ferrari won that comparo anyway. We expect to see this newest F430 going (quickly) to customers early in 2007.

2008 Cadillac CTS

The sedan that jump-started Cadillac’s recent renaissance has undergone its own renaissance for 2008. Thoroughly reworked from its cheese-grater grille to its twin tailpipes, the CTS is snappier-dressed and better endowed for ‘08, with a new interior and available all-wheel drive to boot. Could we have a true BMW 3-series fighter on our hands? We’ll have to drive it to find out of course. In the meantime, this is what we know about the newest baby Caddy.
More brazen on the outside, softer on the inside
The new CTS’s newfound beefiness starts with a two-inch wider track front and rear that lends some real athleticism to its stance. The wheelbase is unchanged from ‘07, but overall length grows by an inch and a half and width expands by two. Also contributing are the CTS’s faster rear window, more elegantly sculpted flanks, LED ancillary lighting elements, and, oh yeah, that two-dozen-jumbo-size-egg-crate grille. Though we’re not fond of unnecessary glitz (such as the “side air extractors” that are popping up on everything from the Ford Focus to the Jaguar XK), Cadillac’s “art and science” design theme nonetheless seems to be maturing well, if this second version of the CTS is any indication.
Also new is the interior of the 2008 CTS, which is designed with far more elegant shapes and rendered in upgraded materials throughout. Cadillac is promising a more premium feel, thanks to hand-crafted interior fittings, French stitching, and other tokens of refinement. The former CTS’s PC-inspired center stack has been replaced by a more cockpit-like arrangement. Rear seat legroom and shoulder room are both increased by more than an inch, though most other dimensions are roughly the same.
Better performance promised
Always a competant, rear-drive handler but a few paces behind the leaders in the powertrain department—the 400-hp CTS-V notwithstanding—the first-generation CTS never mustered the strength to put up a serious fight in the compact sport sedan class, especially now that such slick sedans as the Infiniti G35 and, of course, the BWM 335i are dancing in the ring. The 2008 CTS, however, is lacing up its gloves backed by a much more comprehensive—and competitive—line of engines, transmissions, and now, a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.
The current model’s 255-hp 3.6-liter V-6 will carry into ’08, and the 210-hp 2.8-liter six is dropped for the U.S. market. That makes the base motor for North America the 3.6, which gains 3 horsepower (to 258) and holds steady at 252 lb-ft of torque. Even bigger news, however, is an amped-up version of the 3.6 that, thanks to direct injection, produces a much juicier 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. All motors will be available with manual or automatic transmissions, each with six forward gears (last year’s auto was a five-speed unit). On-demand all-wheel drive will be offered with the 258-hp 3.6-liter-and-automatic combo.
A limited-slip differential will also be offered, as will a performance suspension package that will include 18-inch wheels in place of the standard 17s. The braking, suspension and steering systems have also undergone extensive changes said to increase responsiveness and feel, a claim we look forward to verifying on our own.
Upcoming models
It is almost certain that Cadillac will offer a coupe version of the second-gen CTS, as well as a wagon. The wagon would slip in below the crossover SRX in the U.S. market, but would be of most interest to European Cadillac dealers who have struggled to meet sales targets. About 18 months down the road, Cadillac will introduce a replacement for the fire-breathing, Corvette-powered CTS-V that’s won over many a heart and mind here on Hogback Road. Expect at least 500-horsepower, because that's the number mustered by the BMW M5 and AMG 63 Benzes. There would also be a V-series coupe, which would square up against the upcoming V-8-engined BMW M3.

2008 Buick LaCrosse

Fifty years have passed since a Buick wore the Super nameplate, a top-of-the-line designation that was abandoned when Buicks sported tail fins and perhaps because Buicks sported tail fins. Nobody needed a badge to tell him a car was Super when foot-high tail fins plastered in chrome had already said so.
Buick needs to tell people today that it thinks its cars are better than good, and so returns the Super. For 2008, Buick’s LaCrosse gets Super with a V-8 and less radical upgrades throughout. That V-8—the first to power a LaCrosse—is the same aluminum 5.3-liter currently torque-steering Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo SSs and Pontiac Grand Prix GXPs toward ditches and road signs near you, but inexplicably down three horsepower from those cars. With 323 pound-feet of torque, Buick figures the small-block will hustle the LaCrosse to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, a 1.3-second improvement over a 240-hp V-6 LaCrosse CXS we tested. Being a Buick with a V-8, the LaCrosse gets those fender ports that 14-year-olds used to lust after as they doodled cars in study hall. Funny, not many 14-year-olds have study hall anymore.

2007 New York Auto Show Coverage

For 2008, all LaCrosses get a face lift with front-end styling more closely tied to Buick’s new flagship, the Enclave. But the Super is further differentiated with those portholes; new, eighteen-inch wheels; and unique rocker moldings. A new rear fascia with dual exhaust outlets and a Super-exclusive spoiler identify the car as being better than a 200-hp CX or CXL or a 240-hp CXS.
It’s too bad the LaCrosse Super doesn’t get an interior copied from the prewar Supers. Unique plastic wood looks classier than the equally fake wood in lesser LaCrosses, and the center stack gets a matte silver finish to look more like a Chrysler. Oh, and “woven embossed” leather inserts add some texture to the seats and promise to leave a unique pattern on the backs of bare legs, not that many passengers in the LaCrosse Super will be wearing short shorts (we hope). We’d consider these changes more “moderate” than Super, but Moderate holds no prestige in Buick history. Which leads us to one more question: In 10 years, what nostalgic name will Buick resurrect?

2008 BMW M3 Coupe

The M3’s story is well-known. The mid-size terror debuted here in 1987 with a four-cylinder under its hood and a massive wing on its trunk, serving as the E30 3-series–derived homologation special for German Touring Car racing. It had a unique decklid, rear glass, fenders, and, well, just about everything else. That first M3 dominated racing series around the globe, and along with its six-cylinder E36- and E46-based successors, turned BMW’s M division into the place to go for ultimate performance from the showroom floor. In short, the M3 became an icon.
Now BMW’s taking the M3 to a whole new level.
The latest M3 is powered for the first time by a V-8, a 4.0-liter unit derived from the 5.0-liter V-10 found in the M5 supersedan as well as the M6 coupe and convertible. The 90-degree eight-holer will make 414 horsepower at 8300 rpm—the redline is only 100 rpm farther up the tach, so this thing is gonna wail—and 295 pound-feet of torque at 3900 rpm. The V-8 also boasts the usual top-shelf technologies such as double-VANOS variable valve timing and individual throttles for each cylinder. The V-8 shares the V-10’s bore and stroke, 12.0:1 compression ratio, and aluminum construction. The crankcase is made from an aluminum-and-silicon alloy, and exposed silicon in each cylinder mitigates friction well enough that separate sleeves aren't required, saving weight. The entire engine actually weighs—thanks to the lightweight material and weight-saving measures—33 fewer pounds than the E46 M3’s iron-block inline-six, and the eight should push the new M3 to 60 mph in well under 4.5 seconds. With a mill this advanced, it’s not surprising that the block comes from the same foundry that supplies BMW with its Formula 1 engines.
Unlike the M5, where a conventional six-speed manual was offered only after M fans freaked out, a six-speed stick will be the standard transmission for the M3; a dual-clutch automated manual similar to VW/Audi's DSG will likely be an option later. BMW’s variable differential—with up to 100-percent lockup—keeps the power heading to the ground. The M3 will have, like the M5, a “power” button located next to the shifter. It won’t unleash an extra 100 ponies as in the big supersedan but will instead increase throttle response through heightened accelerator sensitivity—think of it more as a sport button than one that actually delivers more power. The optional MDrive system will allow drivers to quicken the steering rate for the active-steering system. The M3 will also offer BMW’s electronic damper control that serves up three suspension settings, each more hard-core than the last. The M3 defaults all systems at start-up to the softest, least bad-ass settings, but a memory button on the steering wheel can store your favorites. According to BMW, weight stands at just under 3500 pounds—50 lighter than a 335i coupe—which is an increase of 70 or so pounds over the outgoing model, but we’d say the extra 81 horsepower more than makes up for the excess fat. Stopping the M3 will be 14.2-inch discs in the front and 13.8-inchers in back, all vented and cross-drilled.

2008 BMW 335i Convertible

The BMW 3-series is without question one of our favorite cars, reigning on our yearly 10Best Cars list for the past 16 years. The current and much-praised, fifth-generation E90 version is no doubt the best, and is among the most rewarding cars to drive at any price. For 2008, and to no one’s surprise, BMW is adding a convertible version, just as the company has for the past 20 years.
But, this is BMW’s first foray into the expanding, hardtop-convertible parade. Other notable features are a much-improved, rapid-shifting six-speed automatic; special reflective leather to keep the seats cool (up to 30 degrees cooler than conventional leather) when the top is down; and, of course, the spectacular 300-hp twin-turbo inline-six that was introduced in last year’s 335i coupe. In the U.S., the convertible will be offered as the aforementioned 300-hp 335i—the model we got an early drive in—as well as a 230-hp 328i when it goes on-sale at the end of March. Pricing isn’t yet finalized, but the convertible premium will likely not change much from the outgoing model’s, so expect to pay about $7000 more than comparable coupes; roughly $43,000 for the 328i and $48,000 for the 335i.
Hardtop convertibles offer numerous advantages over their soft-top competitors, including coupe-like quietness and excellent visibility when the top is up. BMW reports that the rear side windows have grown 30 percent in the new 3-series convertible, while overall visibility is up 38 percent. To our eyes, visibility out of the convertible is essentially equivalent to that of the coupe.
Looks-wise, you probably won’t spot the new convertible by its 3-series-coupe-like front-end, but rather from the rear, where the coupe’s flowing roofline is replaced by a distinct line where the convertible’s roof meets the trunk.
BMW’s new top is a three-piece unit and, at the push of a center-console button or the key fob, stacks the front panel on top of the center panel, then the rear panel on top of both of those before disappearing into the trunk in 22 seconds. It takes a second longer to reverse the process, which is about seven seconds quicker than its closest competitor, the Volvo C70.
The downside of folding hardtops is that they’re heavy and that the top can hog most of the trunk space when down. In the 3-series’ case, the top itself adds 300 pounds, while the extra chassis reinforcements pack on another 150, so expect a 335i convertible to weigh about 4000 pounds. To BMW’s credit, however, the convertible retains a 50-50 weight distribution and is claimed to have 50-percent stiffer torsional rigidity than the previous 3-series convertible. From the driver’s seat, we can tell you that the new 3-series is among the stiffest in its class, with almost no perceptible quivers felt through either the seat or steering wheel.
The convertible’s 12-cubic-foot trunk is actually one cube larger than the coupe’s, but shrinks to 7 with the top down; still leaving usable space beneath the panels. That also compares favorably with the Volvo C70’s 13 cubic feet top-up and 6 top-down. However, the Volvo has a nifty loading feature that electronically motors the roof panels out of the way for easier access to the trunk space with the top down. On the BMW, that feature is optional (part of the $500 Comfort Access, which also includes keyless unlocking/locking and starting) and doesn’t work as well as there’s no button (instead you must click the key fob twice), and even then doesn’t make loading as easy as the Volvo does. However, the 3-series has a folding rear seat and a 16-inch-wide trunk pass through to accommodate the must-have set of golf clubs under the folded roof.

2008 Audi TT-S

At the TT’s launch earlier this year, Audi chief of concept development Ulrich Hackenberg boasted that the latest TT had now become “a true sports car.” Well, despite Audi’s redesign, we still don’t see the TT as a hard-core competitor to the Porsche Cayman or BMW Z4 M coupe.
Audi hopes that perception will change when it launches the TT-S. Powered by a high-output, high-boost version of Audi’s 2.0-liter turbo direct-injection engine, the S makes a heady 80 more horsepower than the regular-issue version of the engine. In fact, the 280-hp turbo engine makes 30 more horses than the optional 3.2-liter V-6, thus making it the most powerful engine Audi has installed in a TT. Standard equipment on the S-version includes Quattro drive, adaptive magnetic shocks, and a six-speed manual. Audi’s Direct Shift Gearbox will not be offered on the TT-S because the engine’s output exceeds the power limit of the transmission.
Exterior changes to the TT-S are subtle and for the most part functional. Large 19-inch wheels fill the fenders, and two intakes up front feed a larger intercooler (lesser TTs make do with fake intakes). And then there’s the deeper chin spoiler that reputedly improves aerodynamics. The interior of the TT-S has lightweight racing-style seats and plenty of aluminum and leather trim.
We had the opportunity to drive the TT-S on a handling course and high-speed oval. At idle, the engine proclaims with a dog-like snarl that this is no ordinary TT. Kick the throttle, and the TT-S responds quickly, even below 2000 rpm. From 2400 rpm and up the engine offers continuous and linear thrust that doesn’t taper off until the rev limiter halts the proceedings at 6800 rpm. According to our stopwatch — official performance testing was not allowed on our prototype drive — the TT-S sprints to 60 mph in the low-five-second range. Suspension tuning and the more powerful engine make the TT-S a livelier and more reactive car to driver inputs than the relatively lazy, lesser TTs. Handling feels refreshingly neutral through fast bends, and at the limit the car will drift nicely as long as one keeps feeding power. The changes to the S bring it closer to the competition, and although it will make an interesting alternative to the Porsche and BMW, it seems unlikely to win any comparison tests.
A few months after the TT-S debuts, Audi plans to launch an even more hard-core TT. Dubbed the TT-RS, power will come from a turbocharged version of Volkswagen’s 2.5-liter inline-five, making roughly 350 horsepower. A beefed-up Direct Shift Gearbox will perform gearchanges, and a version of the RS 4’s dynamic ride control with remote shock reservoirs will keep the chassis on an even keel. Equipped as such, the TT looks like it could actually make a serious run at toppling the Porsche Cayman S.

2008 Audi TT

Not many cars are icons right from the moment of introduction, but Audi's TT definitely belongs to this select club. From the moment the media and the public set eyes on Audi's dramatic Bauhaus styling, they drooled all over it. And if the exterior shape got them all a-quiver, the ground-breaking interior design helped blind most critics to the fact that the TT was built on a Golf platform of no particular distinction. The first cars were front-drivers and definitely lacked something in the refinement stakes. When Quattro versions appeared, they did much to civilize the steering, but it took the installation of the 3.2-liter V-6 and Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) to elevate the TT to a position of near parity in the premium European sports-coupe league.
Without losing its instantly recognizable on-road presence, the 2008 model addresses many of the shortcomings in the now-aging predecessor; it now has aluminum structures, more-powerful engines, and a revised DSG, now called S tronic. Although the car is instantly recognizable out on the road for what it is, almost everything about it has been revised and upgraded. You really need to park the two models side by side to appreciate the extent of the makeover.

2008 Aston Martin DBS

With its completely exposed powder blue paint shimmering in the sun, the 2008 Aston Martin DBS has been caught while testing both on public roads and the track. While its official debut is set for the Geneva auto show in March, the concept’s lack of disguise previews not just the car we’ll get here late next year, but also the look of the new James Bond hero car seen in Casino Royale starting mid-November. Interestingly, the DBS is the first James Bond Aston to be seen in one of the James Bond movies before it has officially been launched.
Not surprisingly, Aston Martin officials were relatively mum on specific modifications to the DB9-based supercoupe other than what we can all see by looking at it—specifically, a deeper air dam, larger side vents, larger wheels and aerodynamic modifications all around—but they did confirm a significant increase in the V-12’s power output and a commensurate increase in overall performance capability. Just to mess with us, it seems, Aston Martin slapped the prototypes caught by photographers with “DBRS9” badges, leading many editorial outlets to mislabel the vehicle as the DBRS9, the name of a DB9-based racer that is not, and never will be, street legal. This vehicle, however, is in fact going to be called DBS.
With the Vanquish discontinued after 2006, the DBS becomes the performance flagship of the Aston Martin line. A convertible DBS is “doubtful,” Aston Martin says.

CHARLESTOWN, NH, July 18, 2007 – The SCA and Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) have launched a nationwide competition to discover the next big idea in conservation, with a top prize of a brand new MAZDA3 and $10 000. The SCA/Mazda Conservation in Action Contest, a cornerstone of SCA’s 50 th anniversary celebration, challenges young people to develop action-oriented environmental solutions and pays tribute to SCA founder Elizabeth Cushman Titus Putnam, who first proposed a “Student Conservation Corps” in her senior thesis in the mid-1950s. MINI SUV

MINI has been in the news lately with regards to the forthcoming Clubman model, the much awaited MINI Cooper wagon. Much like the internationally-inspired wagon concepts, the new Clubman will feature a rear-hinged access (suicide) door plus an extended wheelbase for much-needed extra interior room. Undisguised interior and exterior spy shots have already made their way onto the internet and it’s common knowledge that the car will be debuting this September in Frankfurt. But what’s also got MINI in the news is word regarding a forthcoming compact sport utility vehicle, filling in the niche that smart didn’t when the formore compact SUV was canned.
According to the Globe and Mail newspaper, Canadian automotive consortium Magna is in talks with BMW to produce this vehicle, which is rumoured to be called the Colorado (although GM, with its Colorado pickup truck, may have something to say about this… how about Mini Moke instead). The Colorado would utilize the stretched platform of the Clubman, but would feature additional ground clearance plus a new all-wheel drive system. The little SUV is expected to account for 65,000 units per year. Surprisingly, along with this info came news of a scheduled production figure of 20,000 units for a Volkswagen roadster.

The MINI has always been a popular vehicle, appealing to consumers of all types, but the new model with its refined new engine lineup, improved safety and better build quality has had consumers snapping them up as fast as they’re being churned out of the Oxford factory. As of right now, there’s no extra capacity to build more models, let alone the new Clubman and SUV. In order to keep the brand profitable, MINI needs to keep its production numbers up, and by expanding its product range to an expected five vehicles, it should have no problem staying in the black.
With the SUV on the way, Magna looks to be finally getting a break. After being pegged as the next owner of Chrysler Group earlier this spring (instead, it went to Cerberus), Magna also lost two consecutive contracts for the assembly of vehicles at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria. First BMW announced that it would be building the next-generation X3 (currently produced in Austria) in Spartanburg, South Carolina alongside the X5 and upcoming X6. Last year, BMW produced 113,000 X3s, which represents a good chunk of the facility’s capacity. More recently, Chrysler announced that it would be shifting the production of the European and international market 300s from Austria to the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant.
Meanwhile, MINI is preparing to launch the second generation cabriolet. The formula for the drop top model hasn’t been changed, and therefore will still feature the same retro-style cloth top with retractable fabric sunroof. Though the new ‘07 model has been on sale since early this year, dealers are still selling the outgoing model.

Sedan and Roadster

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. This appears to be the motto that VW is taking with regards to its ultra-luxury sedan, the Phaeton.
The Phaeton was an excellent vehicle, the perfect demonstration of what an automaker with brilliant engineers can do if it chooses not to concern itself with budget constraints. Built with immaculate precision, the highest quality and newest technology, the Phaeton was a truly impressive vehicle. The only problem is that it was a sales flop. It failed to capture the North American market due to image-related problems. Consumers didn’t feel compelled to invest considerable amounts of money in an entry-level brand that also produces Golfs, Jettas and Beetles. But just because the Phaeton didn’t make it in North America doesn’t mean that it’s a dud elsewhere in the world. In other markets, including its home country of Germany, it recently received a mid-cycle update that focused on appearances and technology similar to the changes made to the Touareg 2. And that mild facelift makes it clear that VW is getting ready to bring the next generation Phaeton to market in a couple of years.
Insiders are reporting that the underpinnings of the new Phaeton could come from upscale sources, as if its relationship with Bentley’s Continental GT and Flying Spur isn’t enough. The first rumour sees VW teaming up with parent company Porsche, twinning the development of the Phaeton with the sports car brand’s up and coming Panamera four-door. This is a fairly believable approach considering the two worked together in developing the Touareg and Cayenne combo. The other potential version would link the Phaeton to the next-generation Audi A6 and A8. The vehicle that was spied, sported the tail end and doors of the current-generation Audi A8, which could indicate that the big VW would go on a weight-loss diet consisting of an aluminum space frame chassis.
When the Phaeton returns, it will most likely be offered in a four-door version as well as a new two-door version. The former won’t be the limo-like vehicle that was brought here between 2003 and 2005, but a sleek new four-door coupe, a vehicle that could lure buyers away from the Mercedes CLS, the upcoming BMW CS and other sporty sedans. Previously, it was thought that this vehicle would be based on an extended wheelbase version of the Passat, allowing for it to be built and sold at a relatively affordable price, but it looks like the plans to up Volkswagen image by chasing the world’s finest brands are back into play.
The real surprise, however, comes from the fact that VW looks to also be targeting the grand touring convertible market, and specifically the Mercedes SL-Class roadster. The grand touring market is a highly profitable arena with competitors from Jaguar, BMW, Maserati and others, and Volkswagen could easily obtain a slice with a sleek two-door folding hardtop convertible. Spy photographers have snapped a vehicle that fits this description to a tee, circulating around Norfolk, England - the home of engineering consultants and sports car makers, Lotus.
Whatever the end result may be, it’s clear that Volkswagen is serious about taking on and beating the competition, entry-level, top of the line or otherwise. It certainly has the ambition and the resources to do so.

While the now profitable Ford Motor Company has been in the spotlight regarding the sale of the brands that the comprise Premiere Auto Group, its European division will have something new to show come this September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Ford is practically the only major mainstream manufacturer in Europe to not offer a compact sport utility vehicle since it withdrew the Maverick from the market during the early part of the decade. The car that will be shown at Frankfurt is a refined version of the iosis X concept that was displayed at last year’s Paris auto show, and should fill in this much-needed gap nicely.
Kuga sounds like a play on the Mercury two-door coupe but it’s got nothing in common with the big American cat .The edgy, ‘Kinetic Design’ styling of the Kuga blends many of the traits of new European-market Ford products, such as the curved and sporting roof line of the S-Max people carrier, the wheels of the high-performance Focus ST220, and the detailed headlamps and upturned grille of the freshly launched Mondeo midsized sedan, but sports bulging fenders and beefier lower cladding to give it a stronger, more durable look. Ford’s aim is to give the typical compact crossover a sportier look, something that only Mazda has successfully done with its

CX-7.
Ford’s Chief Designer for Exteriors, Stefan Lamm said, ‘Kuga is adventurous and distinctive, and we wanted to highlight this in our first official image . . . We believe that there is a role for a more athletic and charismatic vehicle that marks a departure from the norm, in the same way that the award-winning Ford S-Max carved out new territory for an MPV.’

While the official details about its platform and powertrain have yet to be announced, the Kuga will ride on the compact C1 platform that is shared with the European Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Volvo compact range. While the production engines are expected to include a series of economical four-cylinder and diesel engines, the Kuga is actually rumoured to be the first product developed by Ford of Europe to feature a gasoline-electric hybrid system. Ford will build the Kuga at its Saarlouis plant in Germany, with production expected to begin next spring. That’s about the same time that Volkswagen’s compact ute, the Tiguan, will hit the assembly line a few thousand kilometres away in Portugal.
Like most of Ford of Europe’s products, it’s pretty much set in stone that we won’t be getting the Kuga, though it’s been rumoured that Ford’s CEO Alan Mulally and his product development boss, Derek Kuzak want it and the Ford C-Max concept crossover for our market. Wouldn’t it be great if this little soft roader / compact crossover ended up on our shores as the replacement to the Escape?

The gearless CVT transmission comes and goes in waves of popularity. Previously isolated to European and Japanese-market city cars, they’ve become an aide in the modern quest for fuel-efficient vehicles around the world. Without physical ratios or a torque converter, they’re more efficient than their regular automatic transmission counterparts, but are prone to what’s called the rubber band effect where the engine’s speed rises disproportionately to the speed of the car.
New technology has helped to reduce the negative sides of the CVT, and has allowed it to be used in more powerful applications. One brand that’s capitalized on this is Nissan, which offers CVTs in practically every model it makes, but for its heavy-duty SUVs, trucks and the 350Z sports car. Because of the CVT’s efficiency, all Toyota and Lexus hybrid models use the technology, as does the Honda Civic Hybrid and the Nissan Altima Hybrid. Prestige brands have also worked with CVT gearboxes. Audi’s MultiTronic CVT transmission utilizes a metal link chain for front-wheel drive A4s, while Mercedes-Benz’s A- and B-Class feature a CVT with seven artificially created ratios instead of a conventional automatic.
On the contrary, there are some brands that haven’t been particularly pleased with the results of their CVT transmissions. Ford dropped their ZF-built CVT from the Five Hundred full-size sedan and Freestyle crossover when they made the jump to the Taurus update. Saturn completely discarded CVTs after offering them on the ION and the outgoing VUE. The previous MINI Cooper featured a CVT transmission in place of an automatic, though it’s no longer available.
Now Subaru, one of the quirkiest automakers around, known for their all-wheel drive systems, unique boxer engines and durability, is getting ready to trod down the CVT path once again, according to Winding Road magazine. Having been one of the first to offer a CVT in North America, with its subcompact Justy, it is already a believer in the technologies’ many advantages. The new gearbox would be used in place of a standard automatic, and will be available with most of the mainstream engines that the brand offers. Subaru also hopes to have a CVT available in every car it makes by the year 2010.
Due to the power limitations that CVTs have, we doubt that they’d be featured on the turbocharged 2.5-litre H-4 engine that will move the ultra-powerful Impreza WRX STi, but current CVT technology would still enable it to be used on the less powerful Impreza WRX, Legacy and Forester models. The first Subaru product to feature a CVT transmission is projected to be the 2009 Legacy that is also set for a facelift in that particular model year.
Subaru’s first diesel, a 2.0-litre horizontally opposed engine (a world first for this engine configuration) will be available in North America within the next few years, but the brand hopes on making another world first by mating this new CVT to it. The combination of a high-efficiency diesel engine with a CVT should help make the forthcoming Legacy one of the thriftiest midsize sedans on the market.

Debut at Geneva

Since his first project with Kia, the ex_cee’d cabrio concept car, Peter Schreyer has been hard at work on several new projects in an attempt to change the way people think of the budget Korean carmaker. It’s starting to work, as the compact cee’d has really spiced things up for the brand. Critics were truly impressed with the dynamic characteristics of the hatchback, not to mention its first-rate interior quality and first rate fit and finish. Buyers now have other reasons to buy one of their products besides the excellent warranty and the truly affordable prices. Kia now wants to add stylish designs to the list of reasons for purchasing one of their cars, and their forthcoming sports coupe looks to be the vehicle to do it.
Earlier in the year, it was rumoured that Kia was engineering a car to gun down the likes of Audi’s TT, and now that rumour has been confirmed as Kia’s announced that its show car for the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show will be a 2+2 sports coupe. From the first image provided by the manufacturer, this car is unlike any other Kia we’ve ever seen, with a low hood line and an aggressive, almost shark-like grille. The car’s use of lighting is very similar to what the Chinese-designed Buick Riviera Concept incorporates into its design, though it’s limited to the bumpers rather than around the entire car. Nevertheless, it’s certainly a striking sight. If the front end looks as good as this, the rest of the car is guaranteed to turn heads.
Kia’s design chief Peter Schreyer summed up the situation at Kia, saying, “Seldom does a designer have such a clean sheet to work with. We started this exciting journey with the Kia ex_cee’d cabrio concept at the Geneva Show back in March, and at Frankfurt, I’m sure Kia will surprise the entire automotive world when people see our new sports coupe concept in the metal.”
In order to back up its sporty image, you can bet that the engine under the coupe’s hood is going to be strong. Powertrain options could include a V6 engine, though another viable and more likely option would be the 200+ horsepower turbocharged inline-four that is set to be launched in the high-performance Kia cee’d XR.
Schreyer also said, “Rear-drive would make it easier to get great proportions to the design, but I wouldn’t want to make an expensive car. Any coupe should cost around $20,000.” By sharing the platform with Hyundai’s forthcoming RWD coupe, there’s a good chance that this dream may indeed become a reality. Alternatively, if Hyundai were to produce the HND-3 Veloster, a front wheel drive coupe, Kia could base its production version off it.

F430 Scuderia

Weight is everything when it comes to sports cars. Reducing weight allows manufacturers to produce cars that handle better, accelerate quicker, and stop faster. Weight is what allows vehicles like the Caterham 7 and Ariel Atom to outperform and embarrass much more powerful and costly cars, despite their significantly smaller and less powerful engines. This is why many brands make such a big deal out of putting their top cars on diets, such as the Porsche 911 GT3-RS, BMW M3 CSL and the new Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.
Ferrari too has participated in this practice, producing lightweight versions of its street cars, most recently with the mid-engined F360 Modena. The Challenge Stradale, named after the one-make, one-model racing series of which it participated in, offered improved performance by cutting out mass wherever possible. This raw, racer-like experience happened to make it one of the most sought after versions of the car built. Logically, with the launch of the F430 Challenge race series, we’ve been expecting Ferrari to introduce a roadgoing version. Now they finally have, but the car will have a new name, “Scuderia”.
The F430 Scuderia takes weight reduction to extremes. The already lightweight sports car has 100 kg worth of insulation and unnecessary luxuries taken out of what was previously a regular version, but that’s not where the difference ends. The new car sees the astonishing 4.3-litre V8 churn out 510 horsepower, a gain of 27 horsepower over the standard version, with the added bonus of a sky-high redline of 8,500 rpm.
To go with the enhanced engine is an upgraded version of the famed Ferrari F1 6-speed sequential paddle-shift transmission. Thanks to new software, the gearbox is now capable of punching through the gears at an unprecedented 60 ms per interval, which is an improvement over the 150 ms shift capability of the standard F430, and 100 ms of the Ferrari 599 Fiorano, plus it outclasses the SMG transmission used on the BMW M5 and M6. It still trails the twin-clutch DSG/S tronic transmission offered by VW and Audi, which is capable of upshifting at 8 ms. Other mechanical enhancements include the integration of the F1-Trac traction control system with the E-Diff electronic differential for better response and balance.
Performance figures for the F430 Scuderia have yet to be released, but we know it’s going to be quicker from 0-100 km/h than the stock car, and significantly quicker in gear and at higher speeds. After all, what would you expect from a car that has a mere 2.45 kg to move for each horsepower produced? Because of its track-oriented nature, the Scuderia features a tuned suspension, plus new lightweight wheels made from magnesium, and modified bodywork to increase downforce at speed.

Chrysler Crossfire

When Chrysler brought its premium-grade Crossfire coupe to market in 2003 as a 2004 model, there were more than a few that questioned its potential for success. Even at the launch program Chrysler’s executives talked more about the car being an image builder for Chrysler, and an example of the brand’s cooperative development with then-owner Mercedes , than anything about sales volumes.
It didn’t take long for deep incentives to make it clear that North American sports car buyers who were already buying up Audis, BMWs, Porsches, and the Mercedes that this car is based upon in record numbers, weren’t ready for a compact Chrysler in the high-$40K range ($34,495 ), therefore a stripped version hit the market at under $40,000. Heavier incentives followed, yet even with massive discounts Chrysler’s little SLK re-body was so unpopular in the first quarter of 2006 that it managed to top the coldest seller list by staying on dealer lots an average of 302 days, which was longer than any other car sold in US according to J. D. Power and Associates’ Power Information Network. For good reason production was suspended later that year, or as a Chrysler spokesperson stated the company “stopped taking orders (for seven or eight months) in US to balance the inventory”. Model year 2006 and 2007 Crossfires sat in storage in Europe before shipments resumed this spring, yet even with sales back on track they’re extremely slow this year, with last year’s volume at only 8,216 units, just over half of what 2005’s Crossfire managed, at 14,665 sales.
So, with CCM now in control of Chrysler Group and a long list of ex-Auburn Hills execs advising the new owner of what to keep and what to kill, does the Crossfire stand a chance? Not only will a 2008 model be produced, but it will get a tire pressure monitoring system and other minor changes. Why would the troubled carmaker soldier on with such a slow seller?
You might find it surprising to find out that Chrysler is happy with the Crossfire’s sales performance, with one of the car’s engineers, Allan Mecca stating, “We’ve been outselling the Audi TT”. This may be true, yet what Mecca leaves out is that the TT is selling for tens of thousands more than the Karmann-built Crossfire, and making a profit for its Ingolstadt producer. Nevertheless he added, “In our mind, it’s meeting expectations.”
Despite its reprieve from the proverbial pasture, it’s unlike that the Crossfire will continue to be built for much longer than 2008, with most analysts expecting Chrysler’s new management to focus more on core models than expensive side projects. If Chrysler does choose to go the sporty route again, expect something larger and with V8 power such as the Firepower concept coupe that debuted at the Detroit auto show in 2005.

Mercedes Benz C-Class Hatchback

With the growth of the compact segment reaching new heights, Mercedes-Benz looks to be returning to an old favourite in order to increase the number of small vehicles that it offers around the globe. It’s still under debate whether or not Mercedes’ awkward B-Class will be offered in the US, but just the same there’s going to be an all-new small Mercedes model heading into the land of the free as well as other world markets.
Internationally, Mercedes offers two cars that fall under the subcompact and compact sectors, the three- and five-door A-Class, and its larger brother, the B-Class. Though the B-Class isn’t offered in all North American markets, Canada being the sole recipient, it looks as if a new compact solution will be headed in the direction of all North American markets in the form of the next-generation C-Class Sport Coupe, only this time around it’ll be called the CLC, in line with the full-size CLS.
The C-Class Sport Coupe might not have sold all that well in Europe and other world markets, but in North America it fared well. Besides being the cheapest way of securing a three-pointed star on the hood of a vehicle (other than Canada’s B-Class), it was also the right size for entry-level luxury buyers within our markets. Another factor working in favour of the car’s revival is that it actually fits in line with the Mercedes image and tradition of having rear-wheel drive. This factor is more likely to appeal to those in the market of buying Mercedes products, than the front-drive A- and B-Class models. Also, the fact that the CLC is shaped more like a sporting coupe than a monobox hatchback doesn’t hurt sales either.
From what we understand, the new car will feature the styling of the most recent generation of C-Class, complete with angular headlamps and the large and prominent three-pointed star grille. The car will also feature the previous model’s raked fastback, continuing where the old car left off. There is a bit of a catch though; those expecting the advanced new chassis underneath will be in for a surprise. Reports have nearly confirmed that the new CLC will use the chassis of the old C-Class.
Hopefully the new look will be greeted with the necessary changes to keep the car up to date, such as offering new powerplants and transmissions. We’d also hope that the car debuts with the interior of the new C-Class, which has been well-received by the media. Another area that Mercedes will have ironed out are issues regarding the previous car’s quality.
The next-generation car won’t be ready until next spring, when it is expected to make its debut at Geneva and should arrive to market by the end of the year, fresh and ready to compete with others in the budding premium compact sector including Audi’s sporty A3, BMW’s upcoming 1-Series, and Volvo’s hot new C30.

Chrysler New 300

Commonly referred to as , the Chrysler Imperial was scheduled to enter production by the end of the decade. Though the current 300 has served the brand well, helping to create a more luxurious image for the smallest member of the Big Three, having a true flagship vehicle to compete with Ford’s Lincoln and General Motors Cadillac was felt to be necessary. The car debuted in concept form two years ago at the USA International Auto Show, complete with rear-hinged doors and a bluff front end that mimicked the look of the ultra-swanky Phantom.
Unfortunately (or fortunately as this was an extremely controversial design), the dream of selling the Imperial has burst. A Chrysler spokesperson confirmed in an interview with Automotive News that development of the ultra-luxury sedan has not only stopped, but production will not occur.
This news is especially troubling to the employees at Chrysler’s Brampton plant who were promised production of another new vehicle in addition to the Challenger, which would ensure a $700 000 000 investment. The Canadian Auto Workers union agreed to wage concessions in exchange for the new vehicle that would keep the plant running at higher capacities.
So what caused the downfall of the Imperial? Besides being tight for cash, the Imperial was a vehicle that was predicted by the media to be not only unpopular but unnecessary. Chrysler’s current flagship product, the 300C is already facing sliding sales, and though a mild update is expected to arrive for 2008, there are still thousands and thousands of existing model year products still on dealer lots. Furthermore, since the split of Chrysler from Mercedes-Benz, new owners Cerberus are more interested in turning a profit, something the Imperial would not guarantee.
The reality, however, has less to do with financial reasons and more to do with the forthcoming proposals by the US government for fuel consumption. Though not yet confirmed, the CAFE standard requires the automobile manufacturers to produce vehicles - including cars, minivans, SUVs and pickup trucks - capable of attaining 35 mpg. Currently the 300, even with its smallest V6 engine is unable to meet these standards, let alone a bigger and heavier vehicle that would require V8 power. MDS cylinder-deactivation or otherwise, we shouldn’t expect much better than half that for the big sedan without the use of diesel or hybrid technologies. And the current CAFE ratings are only the beginning of what is expected to become even stricter regulations.
There is some good news to report, mind you. According to the Detroit Free Press, Chrysler has just invested a reported $1.2 billion into the next generation 300, which will continue to be built in Brampton. These vehicles are expected to arrive on the market in either 2010 or 2011. Also to fill the space that the Imperial would have taken, Chrysler will be allocating its European right and left hand drive production to Brampton, including the Euro-exclusive 300C Touring . Currently, European-market 300s are built at the Magna-Steyr plant in Austria.

A lot can happen in the time span of a decade. We’ve seen brands die, brands created and the rise, fall and struggle of some unexpected automakers. The past ten years also saw the dramatic increase in the price of fuel, which resulted in the quest for alternative fuels such as E85 and hydrogen, not to mention clean diesel technology and advent of the hybrid. Ten years also happens to mark the amount of time that Mercedes has been building vehicles in USA at its Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama.
It all started with the German brand’s push to bring a mainstream luxury sport utility vehicle to market. Back in ‘97, the premium SUV segment had yet to be tapped, with the only true participants being the Mitsubishi Montero, the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Grand Cherokee and the Land Rover and Discovery. Though Mercedes had been building the dressed up military-derived G-Class, albeit leaving it in Europe and other world markets, the ML brought affordability to the game. Needless to say, the vehicle was a hit, winning countless awards and racking up sales of over 850,000 units over the past decade.
Since that time, Mercedes has invested heavily in its AL assembly facility, doubling production capability by adding a second line, enabling the plant to build two additional SUV-based products related to the ML, the R-Class crossover-tourer and the GL-Class seven-seat luxury sport utility vehicle. These three vehicles are produced exclusively in AL, and are selling quite well in 135 different countries around the world. Last year, Mercedes-Benz’s Alabama facility built a total of 170,000 units, more than any other year in the plant’s history.
To celebrate, Mercedes has just announced a new, commemorative, limited edition version of the ML called “Edition10″. Rather than offering it with just one engine, Edition10 will be available globally with five different powerplant options, including three CDI diesels and two gasoline engines (ML350, ML500). The package includes three different colours including black, silver and white, painted AMG-sourced 20-inch alloy wheels in silver or chrome shadow paint wrapped in hefty 265/45R20 tires, a titanium-look grille and hood vents, and special Edition10 exterior badging. Interior appointments include a two-toned colour scheme, two choices of wood trim, sports gauges and stainless steel pedals, plus blue tinted glass. As far as appearance packages go, the Edition10 does a great job of making the ML look more aggressive and sophisticated. Pricing on the package isn’t yet available.
At the celebration last week, CEO Dieter Zetsche announced that there’s much in store for the Alabama plant as Mercedes continues to expand its operations. Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch a new generation of compact SUV shortly, and while rumours suggest that it will be built in Europe, production may very well be allocated to USA.

GM to Bring More Clean Diesels to North American Market

After suffering a bout of unpopularity in North America, diesel power is finally returning to favour. Automakers are developing extra clean diesel engines capable of overcoming extremely tough emissions controls, which are also smooth, powerful, rich in torque and easy on the wallet. Thanks to technology developed and refined in Europe, North Americans will be treated to the latest generation of engines that feature piezoelectric injectors and variable geometry turbochargers. These engines have already started to appear on ML-, R- and GL-Class Mercedes and Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, and will appear next year in the new Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Tiguan TDI. Other automakers have pledged to enter the battle by the end of the decade, including BMW, Honda, Hyundai and Subaru.
While some brands aren’t firm believers in the technology for our market (Toyota preferring hybrids and Ford opting for its TwinForce engines), the latest player to the compression ignition game will be General Motors. Product guru Bob Lutz recently confirmed and outlined the General’s plan for diesel technology in North America on his Fastlane Blog. The first diesels were already announced a few weeks ago, designed for use in General M’s GMT900-series SUVs, pickups and the Hummer H2. But there’s much more in store.
The second wave of diesels expected to arrive by 2009 will be wearing the Cadillac crest, no less, bringing back scary memories for those who remember Cadillac’s ill-fated fling with poorly executed diesels in the late ’70s, early ’80s. These new modern powerplants will be altogether different, however, and will include an engine designed for use in RWD and AWD vehicles. General Motors will be working with its latest purchase (half-purchase, buying 50-percent, technically), Italian diesel specialist VM Motori (the company behind the Liberty CRD’s engine) to build a new 2.9-litre V6, which should provide ample power and torque. It’s expected that the engine will be used in the CTS, STS and the SRX crossover. Following this, Lutz stated that a front-wheel drive version of the engine would be available by the end of the decade, with insiders hinting at its debut in the next-generation Saturn Aura, which is expected to be a badge-engineered clone of the next-generation Opel .
Despite the good news, Lutz doesn’t believe that it’s wise to pin the automaker’s hopes on diesel technology. Emissions controls are expected to be raised further in the not too distant future, which almost certainly will require the use of more costly filters that will send prices of diesel-powered cars shooting upwards. Lutz currently expects the cost of equipping cars with the right filters and emission controls to cost around $2,000+ USD per unit, in addition to the $2,000 average that diesel cars command over their gasoline counterparts. Another point against diesel engines is the issue of reserves, or namely the lack of reserves and refinery production capacity, plus in the U.S., at least, fewer refueling stations.
Instead, the general consensus amongst automakers is to provide a diverse portfolio of powertrains including E85, hybrids, hydrogen vehicles and electric cars with ERV, such as the Chevrolet Volt Concept.

Now, that's Italian! The Moto Guzzi Norge isn't perfect, but, really, who cares?

Italian motorcycles are nothing if not idiosyncratic -- think $600 valve adjustments, clattering dry clutches and mechanics who can't pronounce Cagiva, let alone service one. But they engender such passion that devotees will overlook foibles the owners of any other bike would never tolerate.
And so it is that I can praise Moto Guzzi's sport-touring Norge despite a lengthy list of quirks -- the less charitable would call them flaws -- that includes having to remove one-third of its beautiful, if haphazardly finished, bodywork just to check the oil.
Such things seem tolerable, if not reasonable, after a day on the Norge. It's a joy to ride.
Moto Guzzi started building motorcycles in 1921 and has innovated many of the features we take for granted -- center stands, rear swing-arms, cartridge forks. Its trademark V-twin engine is bulletproof, and Guzzis rival BMW in both reliability and owner loyalty.
Although the 2007 Norge is a new model based upon the Breva 1100, its lineage dates to 1928 and the GT 500, which Moto Guzzi claims was the world's first grand touring motorcycle. That motorcycle was renamed the Norge after Giuseppe Guzzi rode one 4,000 miles from Italy to Norway.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I've always found Italian bikes gorgeous. The Norge is no exception. Its curving lines are voluptuous and give the bike a fast, aggressive appearance. The stainless steel exhaust and cat's-eye headlight add to the look. The saddlebags are generously sized, easily removed and feature a unique double latch for added security.
But the bike's chromed plastic accents look cheap, and the mirrors, although effective, would look better on a cruiser. The plastic bodywork is haphazardly finished -- the paint didn't make it into the nooks and crannies, and the back side isn't painted at all.
The seat is wide and comfortable and not quite 31 inches off the ground. The bars are wide and provide good leverage, but they aren't adjustable and those with short arms will find them a bit of a reach. The hydraulic brake and clutch levers are adjustable, as are the foot controls.
The windshield is too narrow to provide adequate protection and the mechanism that raises and lowers it is downright ugly. What's more, the switches to activate it -- up on the left handlebar, down on the right -- are too far away to use without taking your hands off the three-way heated handgrips.
As long as I'm nit-picking, the digital data display (average and maximum speed, battery voltage, trip odometers, fuel mileage and more) is difficult to read in bright light and is partially obscured by the speedometer's cheap-looking chromed plastic bezel.
And what sort of engineer designed the bodywork so you have to remove the left and right lower fairings to check the oil? Guzzi says it is addressing that problem, but it never should have occurred in the first place.
But you know what? Those complaints grew increasingly trivial with every mile.
I recently rode a bright red Norge 300 miles around Marin and Sonoma counties and found myself liking it more and more as the day wore on. It's quick, it's nimble and it's comfortable enough to ride all day.
Much of that can be attributed to the wonderful V-twin engine.
The motor, which has a rumble reminiscent of a Harley- Davidson, produces a claimed 89 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque.
The smooth engine has strong low-end, good midrange and an exhilarating top-end that generates propulsion until just before the rev-limiter kicks in at 8,250 rpm.
Throttle response is flawless. The six-speed transmission shifts effortlessly, although neutral was occasionally hard to find.
Most motorcycles have transversely mounted engines, meaning the crankshaft spins in the same direction as the tires. The resulting gyroscopic effect counteracts steering input. Moto Guzzi mounts its engines longitudinally; the crankshaft spins perpendicular to the wheels, minimizing the motor's gyro effect.
That helps create an exceptionally nimble motorcycle, even though it weighs 616 pounds fully fueled. It feels a bit top-heavy carrying six gallons of gas, but it's never overbearing.
The agility is accentuated by an excellent suspension, and the bike inspires confidence. The ride is smooth but firm enough to push the bike hard through the curves, although cornering clearance is limited by the center stand. It'll drag if you get too aggressive.
Still, I rode the Norge on Stewarts Point-Skaggs Springs Road in Sonoma County, and it handled everything from the tightest switchbacks to the long sweepers around Lake Sonoma with grace. Keep it in third or fourth and just roll on and off the throttle.
The Brembo brakes, with 320mm rotors up front, are strong, and a switch on the fairing lets you deactivate the anti-lock brakes -- but you've got to take your right hand off the handgrip to push it.
While Moto Guzzi may have created the grand touring motorcycle, BMW long ago set the standard with its venerable RT. The Norge (base price $14,990) is aimed squarely at the latest iteration of that bike, the R 1200 RT (base price $16,650).
Whether it hits the mark depends upon how idiosyncratic a bike you're willing to tolerate.

GM reports third straight quarterly profit,fueling hopes in Detroit

DETROIT -- For a time, it looked as though Detroit's three automakers could do no right, losing billions while cranking out inefficient trucks just as gas prices rose above $3 per gallon.
But recent quarterly profits by General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have given the Motor City a little hope that better days are ahead, even though both companies made most of their money overseas.
Of course, good news could be bad news in the auto industry, where companies are hashing out a new contract with its hourly workers.
Today, GM ran its string of profitable quarters to three when it announced second-quarter net income of $891 million.
Earnings growth in Europe, Latin America, Asia and other areas eclipsed lingering problems in North America. Although GM improved in its back yard, it still posted a net loss of $39 million there.
Last week, Ford posted its first quarterly profit in two years at $750 million but warned that it hadn't turned the corner to sustained profitability. Chrysler Group's second-quarter earnings results have been delayed until August by the pending sale of 80.1 percent of the company to Cerberus Capital Management LP.
The second-quarter profits may be bad timing, coming on the heels of the formal start to contract talks with the United Auto Workers, although analysts say the companies can still point to losses in North America to show the need for concessions.
Several industry analysts said that while signs of trouble remain at both Ford and GM, the profits are still good news. At least for now, bankruptcy talk has subsided.
"I think it's brightening up," David Healy, an analyst with Burnham Securities, said of the clouds that had been hanging over Detroit. "Both companies have shrunk about one-third of their hourly work force and they've closed a lot of plants. They're basically adjusting to the level of business that they're doing now."
Peter Nesvold, an automotive analyst for Bear, Stearns & Co., said Detroit is starting to see the results of changes in product lineups due to higher gas prices and competition from Japanese automakers.
"I think that's what the last two years have been about," he said. "It's been responding, albeit late, to the shift in consumer preference and the ongoing competitive threat from the new domestics."
At GM, the second-quarter profit was a huge reversal from the $3.4 billion loss it posted in the same period last year. The automaker's shares fell 21 cents to close at $32.40 in trading today after rising as high as $34.65 earlier in the session.
"Our heavy commitment to key growth markets around the world really paid off in strong growth and earnings," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner said in a statement.
The net loss in North America was a major improvement over the second quarter of last year, when GM lost $3.95 billion.
In the second quarter of 2006, GM took a giant after-tax charge of $3.7 billion for early retirement and buyout offers that eventually reduced its hourly work force by more than 34,000.
The latest profit amounted to $1.56 per share for the April-June period, compared with a loss of $5.98 per share a year ago.
Revenue fell to $46.8 billion from $53.9 billion a year ago due largely to the sale of 51 percent of GM's former financial arm, GMAC Financial Services.
The latest profit total included $520 million in charges associated with the bankruptcy reorganization of Delphi Corp., GM's former parts arm, and other North American restructuring costs.
The company said its net income from continuing global automotive operations was $618 million, compared with a net loss of $3.48 billion in the year-ago period.
In Europe, the company had net income of $217 million, vs. a net loss of $39 million in the same quarter last year. The company's Asia Pacific unit posted a net profit of $227 million, compared with $376 million in the year-ago quarter, which included $212 million from the sale of GM's interest in Japanese automaker Isuzu.
In its Latin America, Africa and Middle East unit, GM said explosive growth helped it to its best quarterly net income in a decade at $213 million vs. $139 million a year ago.
Chief Financial Officer Fritz Henderson said GM is confident it will achieve its target this year of $9 billion worth of annual cost cuts.
He would not predict when GM would make a net profit in North America, but said restructuring costs for Delphi should be less in the second half of the year.
Mr. Henderson predicted revenue growth in emerging markets for the third quarter while sounding a note of caution for North America, mainly due to weak home sales and high fuel prices, which have reduced pickup truck sales.
For the remainder of the year, he said GM expects continued improved automotive earnings and improved but negative operating cash flow.
Mr. Henderson would not comment when asked what impact the quarterly profit might have on the union contract talks.
The Detroit Three want to cut a $25 per hour labor cost disparity with their Japanese competitors. Analysts have said reducing labor costs is critical to their long-term viability.
GM said its revenue per vehicle increased $1,540 in the quarter compared with the year-ago period, reflecting a more profitable product mix, reduced low-profit fleet sales and its strategy of bringing sales prices closer to the sticker and relying less on incentives.
Already, though, the company has been forced to raise incentives on some pickup models, including zero percent financing for 60 months on extended and crew cab models to counter a highly competitive market.
Mr. Nesvold predicted that GM would continue to sputter in North America for several years while making money overseas, but Efraim Levy, senior industry analyst for Standard & Poor's, said the company can't rely on emerging markets for profit because of volatility and extreme competition.
In the end, he said, long-term recovery rests with making money in North America.
"Ultimately the biggest and the best market is the home market, and that's what they have to improve on," he said.

Nothing overly complicated is involved really, just a laptop with MS Excel and some basic high school physics formulae. Not content to just get the down low on his Jetta, he also managed to convince his friend to sample an E46 M3 - purely in the name of science, you understand. Prius price drop thanks to new '08 Standard model

Toyota just released pricing for most of its 2008 lineup, and along with a brief summary of model changes was information about a new, lower-cost Prius. That's right, a cheaper Prius. We had talked about the fact that consumer clamor for hybrids was waning, but we never expected to see the Prius price reduced. Reading the fine print shows what's really happening is that Toyota has introduced a new "standard" model with slightly less content to get to a lower price point. The base MSRP for the new Standard Prius starts at $20,950, while the Limited goes up about $150 to $23,220.The recent JD Power finding that hybrid popularity is giving way to more interest in diesel powertrains seemed to have some merit as Toyota had said it would be trimming the entry price of its 2008 Camry Hybrid by about $1,000, as well. Although the Camry isn't included in this release, the cheaper Prius seems to bear out that fact. The cheaper '08 Standard Prius should be in dealerships in August. New pricing for the other '08 Toyota models was also announced, and not surprisingly, all went up, even if just a bit.

This might be a week old, but it's still worth mentioning in case you haven't seen it yet. A video of a Porsche Panamera doing some testing was posted on MotorAuthority and popped up on Auto Play as well. In it, you see the Porsche sedan sans most of its disguise cladding, being put through its paces. And better yet, you can hear it, too. As we have said before, we expect the new Porsche to be available with your choice of everything from a hybrid V6 to a twin-turbo V8 underhood. The sound of the car under throttle can be heard at a few points and it has a wonderfully deep growl. We'd guess it's the V8, if pressed. Porsche recently told the world that the Panamera we've been seeing in spy photos (and videos) isn't necessarily the final form, perhaps deflecting some criticism of the rather awkward shape. A production version isn't expected to be unveiled until the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, so there will likely be a lot of changes between now and then.

Porsche doesn't plan to take over VW... yet

The latest in Porsche-Volkswagen relations is that the sports car maker has contingencies in place to raise its stake in the VW Group, but at this point is not planning an outright takeover.
As you may recall, when Porsche recently increased its ownership in Volkswagen AG, it was bound by German law to make an offer to purchase controlling interest. The offer Porsche submitted to Volkswagen shareholders was purposely low because Porsche didn't want to fully take over Volkswagen.
That law is now on the verge of being repealed, leaving the door open for Porsche to further increase its stake, but that doesn't mean that it will automatically take the opportunity to further entrench the anschluss between the two companies founded by Ferdinand Porsche. If, however, Porsche's position on the Volkswagen board is threatened, it could increase its stake up to 50-percent without any further bureaucracy and legal issues, but for now it plans on staying where it is.

Ghosn still interested in U.S. automaker tie-up

While wanting to be on the record as saying he doesn't feel overstretched as the head of both Renault and Nissan, Carlos Ghosn admits the Japanese automaker's recent profit slump is "disappointing." But more importantly, he wants the world to know Nissan is still "extremely profitable." And yet, some thought he was biting off more than he could chew when it was announced that there would be a change at the top of Nissan's U.S. operations. That wasn't the case he points out, as that had been in the works for some time. Ghosn said it would be much more difficult to run both companies if they didn't share so many elements. The dip in profits was attributed to higher costs and weak domestic sales, and the company thinks everything is just fine. In fact, just to add a little spice into the conversation, Ghosn mentioned that he is still interested in possibly working with a major U.S. automaker. That plan didn't get very far last year, but having a European, Japanese and American triumverate makes some sense for world economies, if nothing else.

Lamborghini taking the financial bull by the horns

Here's a profile of Stephan Winkelmann, head of Italian supercar builder, Lamborghini. It comes from The Times and shows us how Winkelmann has put together a pretty solid business plan to help keep Lamborghini out of the sort of financial trouble that has seemingly always been a part of the company's reality. When Audi took control of Lamborghini at the end of 2004, Winkelmann took some time to think it over before agreeing to take the reins. Although the budget seemed modest, Lamborghini had to remain extreme, in his mind. So while the cars themselves have had to use some shared parts with their corporate brethren, they still have that certain Lambo flair. The company also added signature items to their catalog - clothing, merchandise, and accessories - that have helped spread the name.Just before Winkelmann stepped in, the company had finally surpassed 1,000 units sold in 2003, but it wasn't until 2004/2005 that they saw any kind of profit. Last year, they passed 2,000 vehicles sold worldwide and reported earnings of €18.1 million. That's a far cry from the 1970s and 1980s, when selling 250 cars a year seemed fine. Looks like the Superleggera and LP640 Roadster have made '07 a pretty good year so far, too. And there is more to come. "We're getting serious," Winkelmann says. Volvo has to overcome hurdles to market C30

When your average customer is a middle-aged woman and part of a family with a combined income of $140,000, how do you market to men aged between 28 to 38 and earning less than $100,000? That's the dilemma Volvo is facing with the launch of its cool new C30 hatchback, which is supposed to target a younger more dynamic crowd compared to Volvo's traditional customers.
There will be no TV and print advertising for the C30 at all, which we all know means any marketing money earmarked for the hatch is destined for the web. Volvo is going to start by airing three-minute-long webisodes on msn.com hosted by the guy that plays Darryl on NBC's The Office. It's hoping the episo... sorry, webisodes (I hate that word) will hit the sweet spot, but we doubt they will. Volvo knew it was going to have a challenge on its hands marketing the C30 in North America, mainly because of the public's preconceived about what Volvo is. That idea clashes with the sport and youthful C30, though you can count us as fans of the new hatch.
The other major problem is the price. At $23,445, including shipping, a small hatch like the C30 was always going to be a hard sell. It doesn't help that dealers will be less inclined to push the baby Volvo when they can make more profit on larger vehicles.

Japan gets new ist, err... xD

The JDM Toyota with the most peculiar name (it's up against some pretty tough competition on that front), the "ist", had a face lift and heart transplant today. Replacing the original 2002 model, which was sold Stateside as the Scion xA, the new car is still a front wheel drive hatchback, but has taken on distinctly crossover-ish dimensions, and comes with a choice of 1.5 and 1.8 liter motors as opposed to the 1.3 and 1.5 liter line up of old. Prices are a bit below the near-identical US spec Scion xD, starting at $13,800 for a CVT equipped 1.5 but rising to almost $16,000 for the 1.8 with an electronic four speed auto.

The Racing Network (TRN) just put out a call to motor racing fans. Well, fans of racing other than just NASCAR. Trying to gauge public interest, they have asked visitors to vote on their very existence. The question they ask is simple, if a bit wordy: "Would you be willing to: Switch from your current cable or satellite provider to the cable or satellite provider that carries the new non-NASCAR Racing Network, or add the additional cable or satellite provider in order to watch the new non-NASCAR Racing Network?" What they are offering is "a 24/7 racing network" that's "devoted exclusively to the NON-NASCAR race fan." The programming would include "thousands of hours of live, historical and first run racing as well as many weekly race magazine-style shows including weekly coverage of major domestic series, [with] behind the scenes access..." Russia GAZ may be interested in Land Rover/Jaguar

Could Land Rover and Jaguar be headed to Russia? CNN Money is reporting that Group GAZ is showing some interest in purchasing the firms from Ford. Ford has said that it will entertain offers for the two British marques and although several names have been mentioned, this was the first we heard of GAZ being involved. GAZ has already denied the rumor, although it was pointed out that the company has expressed an interest in expansion. This comes almost exactly a year after GAZ first denied interest in Jaguar in a separate sale rumor.If it is interested, GAZ would be on a list of potential suitors that includes private equity firms Cerberus and One Equity Partners, plus new entrants Tata Motors and Mahindra, as well as newcomers American equity firms TPG and Ripplewood Holdings. Of course, all of this is still contingent on Ford really committing to the idea of a sale at all. Concerns about what a sale of these prestige brands could do to Ford's worldwide reputation are still keeping the company from serious work on a sale. As we reported last week, Ford hasn't given any of the bidders a complete financial picture of Jaguar and Land Rover, nor have any of the bidders even been allowed to visit the factories or speak to senior management. Potential buyers have only been told not to bid if they plan on closing factories or moving production out of Britain. We'll keep you posted.

Confirmed! Hyundai making Tiburon replacement RWD

We've had rumors and spy shots before, but up until now we really didn't have any confirmation that Hyundai's new Tiburon replacement would switch from a pull-me to a push-me. With the new rwd platform that the company recently developed for its Genesis luxury sedan, it was expected that the next generation of affordable sports car from Korea would ditch its fwd layout and get some true sports car manners. Well, Hyundai just confirmed that when that car shows up in late 2008 or early 2009, it will indeed be rear-wheel drive.As predicted, the car will share its rwd platform with the already-announced Genesis sedan, which we should see in about a year. The Tiburon replacement should show up half a year to a year after the sedan, and might even come as a convertible. In fact, there is also a suggestion that we'll be seeing several models based on this platform. We're not sure if the coupe will share the sedan's new V8 in addition to the expected V6, but it would make an interesting competitor for the Mustang if it did. Hyundai has officially said no, but there are still whispers, and if not a V8, some kind of boosted V6 in the top models might suffice.

New Porsche Cayenne begets new TechArt Magnum

Well, you knew this had to be coming. The revised Porsche Cayenne has been on sale for a while now, and Porsche supertuner TechArt has readied the next-generation Magnum for an official debut at the Frankfurt show in September. The edgier look of the new Cayenne has given way to a Magnum that's just as aggressive as the outgoing one, but is better-looking in a very angry sort of way. This Magnum looks like it wants to punch you right in the kisser and take your lunch money. Possibly your dignity, as well. The muscled-up bodywork is further accented by swanky Techart wheels and formidable quad exhaust outlets. Inside the cabin, enough leather is stretched over the seating and trim surfaces to make PETA members suffer immediate nervous breakdowns. We also like the snazzy brown carbon fiber trim used in lieu of wood in the photo car. Techart is working on a suite of engine mods for the Cayenne Turbo's mill that will pump it up to 620 horsepower, and their suspension modification allows for a lower-than-standard ride height for normal driving. Model T takes on a HUMMER in hill climb

It wasn't a fair fight at all, but for funsies, a vintage-car hill-climb allowed Forbes Magazine to enter a late model HUMMER H2. You know, just to see how the 316-hp, 4WD SUV would do against, say, a 100-hp 1921 Model T driven by a 70-year-old man. Like we said, it wasn't fair at all. The HUMMER climbed the 475-foot-tall hill in 10.74 seconds and didn't even break a sweat. Among those not surprised at the HUMMER's prowess was Gary Le Fever, the Model T driver who was waiting at the top of the hill for the H2. Le Fever and his 86-year-old Ford had finished the climb in 9.96 seconds!Not a huge difference in a conventional match-up, but considering the participants, an amazing triumph for the Model T's engineering simplicity over the HUMMER's hefty muscle.BTW, the photo is for illustration only. The hill climb was, we understand, much larger.

Spy Shots: Ford Crown Victoria Special Edition, Yay!

Many fans of the Ford Motor Company are longing for some form of the RWD Interceptor concept to become a production reality, and little do they know, such a vehicle is on the way. Well, it's not exactly the Interceptor concept, but spy shots of the 2008 Crown Victoria show that the original Police special will receive the Ford corporate three-bar grille when its refreshed. If the more masculine front clip isn't enough for you to spring for Ford's fleet maestro, then check out the new "special edition" badging complete with a crown adorning the colors of the Italian flag. The only other visible difference on the '08 donut delivery vehicle of choice is a puzzling strip of chrome at the bottom of the lower fascia which looks like a bling goatee. No word yet on powertrain, but the existing 4.6L V8 and a four speed automatic are good bets.It's difficult to understand why Ford would go to the trouble of doing anything other than a full remodel of the Crown Vic. However trivial the costs of the updates, given that the Vic is now available for fleet sales only, we can't see anybody looking at the 2008 Crown Victoria and saying anything other than.... Beauty in the Green Mountains - Hemmings Concours - HUGE Gallery

Last weekend was a carshow smorgasbord for us. We got to hang out with the gullwing-afficionado Bricklin folks, and on Sunday, we headed up to Vermont's Stratton Mountain for the New England Concours D'Elegance. The event was put on in smashing style by the good people at Hemmings, and even though we didn't make it up for the much larger general car show on Saturday, Sunday's Concours was no less enthralling. Concours events are another level entirely, with the field being comprised of cars so perfectly restored they grab you by the earlobes and make you pay attention. If they're not restored, the cars are authentic examples with the most exceptional patina. Either way, the cars at the Concours were incredible. There were cars from virtually every era of motoring, with powerplants as diverse as DC electric motors to Italian V12s. We can't possibly recount all that we saw, but there was a particular '66 Ferrari that blew us away with its originality, a Daimler SP250 proudly displaying its diminutive hemi-head V8, a Duesenberg racer, 1930s luxury rides from Lincoln, Auburn, Pierce-Arrow and Packard, and we finally got to see that DeSoto with electronic fuel injection up close and personal. If you've never been to a concours, you owe it to yourself to go - where else can you take in an unrestored Mercury X100 in exceptionally clean condition, the most perfect '68 Hemi Charger we'd ever seen, and plenty of befinned Cadillacs. We made a whirlwind stop, and shot a hair over 100 pictures, so without further ado, we'll shut up so you can get to the pictures.

2007 Rolling Sculpture car show

Every summer car fans from around the Ann Arbor, MI area drive their prized possessions downtown and park them along Main St, Fourth Ave and the surrounding side streets for the Rolling Sculpture car show. More than 400 cars show up every year and this year the weather for the show was perfect, the humidity of the previous week giving way to a pleasant breeze. The cars on hand ranged from old British roadsters like Sprites and TR4s, to exotics like the Ferrari 512bb. Muscle cars like Mustangs, Camaros and GTOs were well represented as were Corvettes and T-Birds of all vintages. The offbeat machines included a 1916 Detroit Electric and old Dodge Caravan completely covered in blue astro-turf, along with a stretched four door, four seat C4 Corvette. Miracle Car? Look, it's the Jesus MINI!

Some like it, some hate it, but you can find the Ferrari name on just about everything these days. The exotic Italian automaker, as is commonly known, has been pursuing and escalating a merchandising campaign that has accelerated its way into just about every market segment imaginable. Now it may surprise some of the guys over in Maranello, but it turns out there are still some things money just can't buy. Like having a drink named after you.
To well-versed bartenders and their most loyal customers (and by that we mean drunks), this will come as no big news, but as this writer recently discovered, there's a drink called the Ferrari. To the best of our knowledge it's the only racing team or carmaker that has a mixed drink named after it, and if you follow the jump, we'll tell you just how to make it.

NYC cabbies threaten September strike over GPS

With the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission's October 1 compliance date for installation of GPS-equipped information and payment systems in New York's 13,000 taxis, a driver's advocacy group is gearing up to strike in protest. The source of the controversy is the screen above. The system provides riders with useful info like news and weather, as well as credit card payment functionality and the ability to watch the route the taxi is taking to its destination in real-time. We tried it out during the New York Auto show and found it to be pretty cool and easy-to-use. For tourists, it's a nice setup. The only negative observation our driver made when we asked him his opinion of it was that the system didn't take well to fast inputs when in payment mode. Slower, deliberate taps on the touchscreen worked better. According to the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, a non-union group representing drivers' interests, the GPS-based systems are a bad thing, and it claims that its 8,400 members will go on strike September 1 if the TLC doesn't put the kibosh on its fleetwide GPS plan. The organization claims that the systems overreach and are an invasion of drivers' privacy -- a sort of "Big Brother" that'll be used to track cabbies whereabouts at all times. The TLC notes that there are several benefits to drivers in addition to the added functionality it gives riders. Pick-ups and drop-offs are automatically recorded, eliminating the pencil-and-paper system used up until now. Also, drivers will be able to receive real-time traffic info and will gain a measure of protection against the criminals who sometimes prey upon taxi drivers. The GPS should help police track down cars in distress and nab the perpetrators in these situations. Lastly, the TLC says that drivers in cars equipped with the systems already make 18% more in tips. That tidbit has not been part the NYTWA's talking points. According to the TLC, most operators (73%) have already chosen a system ahead of the 10/1 date, anyway. Still, it looks like a showdown between the the TLC and Taxi Workers Alliance is imminent, as the TLC is very unlikely to back down. Whether or not the dustup will actually amount to anything significant remains to be seen.

It's been thirty years since BMW introduced the first incarnation of its flagship luxury sedan. The original 7-Series (codenamed E23) made its market debut in 1977 to replace the four-door version of the smaller 6-Series and to compete with offerings from competitors, chief among them Mercedes-Benz.
Since then, the 7-Series has become a staple of the high-end luxury car market, doing battle with such models as the Mercedes S-Class, Audi A8 and Lexus LS. It is now in its fourth incarnation (not counting facelifts and cosmetic tweaks along the way), and has come a long way in the past 30 years. With the "controversial" styling, insanely complex iDrive system and worldwide portfolio of a dozen different variants, it's doubtful a buyer of the original 7 would even recognize its successor today.
From all of us at Autoblog, we wish the ultimate Ultimate Driving Machine a happy birthday. We look forward to a return to the simpler luxury sports sedan that we'd come to know.

Spy Shots: Gen VI Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit spotted

KGP Photography was spending its weekend in beautiful Death Valley when its photogs snapped a whole lot of pics of the next VW Rabbit in testing. Judging from the VW engineer flipping off the camera (will they ever learn how bad that looks?), we're pretty sure the Volkswagen testers didn't want any pictures out just yet. A new, stronger character line can be seen spanning the Rabbit's flank, and the door handles no longer intersect said crease. The front and rear of the car are pretty well covered, but the general shape doesn't look very different than the Rabbit we already know and love. Powertrains are likely to remain largely unchanged, with a Euro-style range of petrol and diesel engines.The Rabbit/Golf is perhaps the most important car in the VW stable, as it sells worldwide at very high volume. One place where the Rabbit isn't as popular is here in the States, which is part of the reason we didn't get the Gen V Rabbit until only recently. Expect to see the new Golf swing in to European showrooms in 2008, with the bunny-monikered version arriving here a couple of years later. Thirty minutes with the 2008 Jetta Sportwagen

As station wagon lovers ourselves, we were just as disappointed as many of you were when we heard the news that the new Jetta Sportwagen had been delayed due to a plant fire which destroyed 12,000 - 15,000 cylinder heads. After all, with nearly as much space as the average SUV or minivan but with much better fuel mileage and more sport to go with it, what's not to like? And those are just the practical considerations. What about how the car drives? That's an excellent question, so, when we got a chance to get some seat time in an '08 Jetta Sportwagen at the 2007 American Station Wagon Owners Association Convention, we jumped on it.
Here are a few quick details to keep you interested enough to keep reading after the break, which is where you'll find our driving impressions. The wagon (or... wagen) version of the Jetta has 32 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seat in place, and more than double that with the seat folded down at 66.9 cubic feet. Engine choices start with the 2.5 liter inline 5 cylinder with the 2.0T engine as an upgrade. If you're into saving gas with an oil-burner, the 2.0 TDI will be available too. My precious: Nissan's new cat cuts down on expensive metals

Nissan has developed a new catalyst for its gasoline-powered cars that requires only half the amount of precious metals that current designs call for. The catalyst or catalytic converter is a piece of the exhaust system filled with a mix of platinum, rhodium and palladium that captures harmful toxins in a car's exhaust such as nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons by triggering a chemical reaction. Engineers at Nissan used new nanotechnology to prevent the gathering of the precious metals in the catalyst under high temperatures, which meant less of the expensive stuff was required to clean the exhaust. Less metal means less cost, which means more savings for customers. Nissan will be sharing the technology with its French partner Renault and the first cars with the new system should be on the market by early '09. Hopefully this will also mean a reduction in the number of catalytic converters being stolen.

Great Scott! Could new DeLoreans be coming?

There's still a Delorean Motor Company, but it's not in the business of building new vehicles. At least not yet. The Texas-based firm purchased a lot of the assets of John DeLorean's original entity when it went belly-up, and it, along with its regional affiliates, does a brisk business keeping the dream alive. There are about 6,500 of the 9,000 DeLoreans produced still out there, but stocks of viable restoration candidates are petering out. Every time some child of the 1980s builds a replica of the Back To The Future time machine, we lose another candidate to stupidity. The recreations do serve to keep the popularity of the gullwing GTs up, we suppose, but the modifications required end up making a car that is more conspicuous than a bright red Maybach in Amish country. My overbearing opinion out of the way, the crux of the biscuit is that DeLorean Motor Company may soon start building new DeLoreans. They'll be produced as kit cars, side-stepping the tighter restrictions placed on truly serial-produced cars. Once DeLorean Motor Company has cleared its plate of restoration work, likely by March or April 2008, it'll start on the new cars. Iron Man alter ego Tony Stark's R8 at Comic-Con!

Our sister blog, Cinematical, is covering Comic-Con in San Diego and lo and behold, what did they spot out in front of the convention center? Tony Stark's Audi R8. This is just an early tease for Fanboy Nation, and this major product tie-in that will also see several other Audis cross the screen in Iron Man. The silver R8 was parked out front sporting the plate "Stark 4." Priceless. Robert Downey, Jr. portrays the armor-sporting hero in this newest comic-book-to-big-screen adaptation, which, if the reports on the footage shown at the convention are accurate, is going to kick ass. Re-designed Saab 9-3 due in American showrooms in September

The revamped 2008 Saab 9-3 will be arriving in North American dealerships in early September. The lineup will start with the 2.0T Sport Sedan at $28,385 while the Aero V6 will cost at least $35,365. The four and six cylinder convertibles run $39,710 and $45,665 respectively. The new features include rain sensing wipers, OnStar, XM radio and remote top opening for the convertible.

2008 F1 Calendar: Valencia and Singapore in, Montreal in jeopardy

Several big (albeit anticipated) changes were made to the Formula One calendar for 2008, which was released by the FIA yesterday.
The F1 circus will make two new stops at the new circuit in Singapore and at the Valencia track in Spain, previously used primarily for testing. Singapore will slot in right before the grands prix in China and Japan, and most teams are expected to stay out east for the three-week stretch. Valencia joins Barcelona as the second race in Spain, banking on Fernando Alonso's popularity and following the cuts made to second races in Italy and Germany for this year. The race at the Nurburgring will be labeled the German Grand Prix, while Valencia will pick up the European Grand Prix moniker.

LEAKED: Supposed Kia Mesa interior shots

TheCarBlogger just published three leaked pics of what they are claiming to be the first official images of the interior in the new Kia Mesa, nee HM. And just like we were when we saw the interior on the Veracruz, we have to say we are pretty impressed. Nothing cutting edge, but definitely styled to put it in the luxury car camp. The materials might not hold up to that opinion, but they at least look good in the pics. And the admittedly faux wood gives this UV an air of luxury most people probably wouldn't expect from a Korean vehicle. Light and modern, that wood is slathered throughout, even on the steering wheel.What we see in the pics as far as the multimedia navigation/AV system goes is likely the home market setup. Chances are that the States will get the same LG unit we profiled in the Veracruz. There doesn't seem to be any reason why the AUX input jack and a Push-Start button won't make the trip over, however. We're not sure when the Mesa will make its public debut, but we're guessing somewhere between Frankfurt and the end of this year, with sales starting early next year. Ever wonder how seriously the workers really take their jobs on the automotive assembly lines of the world? Seriously, do they really think about us consumers when they are bolting together that subassembly? Are there definitive differences between the way domestic and import vehicles are made that we can really see in the finished product? Well, even if you haven't wondered, we have. And so has Christopher Neiger of AOL Autos. To get some answers, he interviewed an automotive quality engineer who has worked in several plants around the world, for domestic and import manufacturers. His findings are really fascinating. Sketched speculation: Infiniti FX37/FX50 concept

Although the CAR crew seems to have the inside line on Audi's future releases, with its recent spate of "official" images posted earlier this week, Top Speed was able to procure some details about Infiniti's new FX-series crossover.The artist depiction shows a revised front end that draws cues from the new G-series sedan, with more tautly drawn headlamps flanking a revised grille and more muscular front fenders. However, everything aft of the A-pillar appears to carry over from the current model -- pretty much what we've expected.More important than the exterior changes is what lies underhood, and according to Top Speed the new FX will come equipped with either the new 3.7-liter VQ V6 or a 5-liter V8, producing 390 HP and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. Naturally, the new models' badging will reflect their newfound power: FX37 and FX50, respectively.Beyond the upgraded powerplants, expect the new FX to come equipped with a back-up camera, radar-assisted cruise control and mirrors that will automatically adjust when the seating position is changed.Although Top Speed simply cites an internal source for all these details, most of the information seems entirely plausible. We'll just have to wait until next year, when Infiniti pulls the cover off of the new FX in Geneva for confirmation.

Have money, need growth: GM to invest $6b in Daewoo

GM has been rapidly expanding in countries outside the US, and South Korea-based Daewoo has been a major contributor to the company's growth in developing markets. GM is redoubling their commitment to Daewoo by investing $6 billion in the once bankrupt automaker over the next few years. President and chief executive of GM DAT Michael Grimaldi says the money will be used to expand design, engineering, and for new plants and products. Among the projects on the table are a mini car and a small car, which could mean that some form of the Beat, Trax, or Groove could be in the pipeline. With relatively low labor costs and a free trade agreement with the US, GM Daewoo could expand their role of providing low-cost economy cars to our shores, but with a Chevy badge.

Will there be anything left? Tulsa Belvedere set to be de-rusted

The SS Belvedere emerged from its not-so-dry-dock almost two months ago, in all its ferrous oxide glory. Apparently the offer of restoration by Boyd Coddington has either been refused or rescinded, but either way, the Mopar is headed to New Jersey for a spa treatment. Safest Rust Remover, a product of the Ultra One Corporation, is going to take a crack at dissolving just the rust, and leaving everything else intact. It makes us wonder, once you dissolve that rust, will there be merely the lacy suggestion of a '57 Plymouth, rendered in mid-century steel?A website has been launched so you can keep an eye on the progress. All reports about the Safest Rust Remover product are positive, and the non-acid mixture is used to clean Manhattan's Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. A vat half the size of an Olympic swimming pool might be needed, but maybe there's hope for the old girl yet. The game plan for the car is to not restore it, just clean it up and get the engine running -- once those goals are met, a re-unveiling back in Tulsa will be planned. They should get those Skoda bakers for the event so there's at least one perfect looking Belvedere there.

Looking to exit, stage left on a melodious note, Doc Zee has bid the Chrysler team a semi-farewell via email. The message was a polite "thank you," instead of the possibly more appropriate "thanks for letting us swoop in from Stuttgart, blast through your cash and let your product line languish." Dieter Zetsche and Tom LaSorda dashed off the e-mail to all Daimler and Chrysler workers this morning. The sale of the Chrysler unit to Cerberus Capital Management is wrapping up, and the executives extended thanks to employees for all the hard work they've performed over the past nine years. While they are splitting, the rhetoric in the e-mail indicates that there will be some intertwining of the two businesses going forward. Collaboration will continue on electrical components (we hope Chrysler can teach Mercedes a thing or two about making reliable electrics), platform architectures for unitized SUVs and power units. Those collaborations were likely far underway when the schism occurred, and both companies will benefit from the cross pollination. We bet Dieter can bang out a convincing "Free BIrd" on that axe.

Forbes identifies the commutes that kill

Ever feel like one more day of commuting will kill you? You might be right, especially if you live in Riverside, California. Or Atlanta. Or Los Angeles. Those are the top three cities on Forbes' list of the 25 with the most unhealthy commutes. The combination of dangerous drivers, the stress of dealing with them and high levels of air pollution is apparently taking a serious toll on big-city commuters' health. Forbes quotes one study showing Americans commute an average of 25 minutes every day, but are exposed to 50% of the day's pollution during their drives. One study found diesel particle levels four to eight times greater inside commuters' cars than outside. That's nothing to sneeze at.Southern California gets four spots on the list, with Houston, Miami, Detroit and Washington, D.C., taking some of the others.There are ways to make your drive to and from work healthier, though. Forbes recommends you roll up your windows and set the air to recirculate. That will reduce some of the incoming air, and maybe some of the particulates that clog up your respiratory plumbing. Another health-saving solution is to take the long way home. Taking that curvy road home will not only give your inner F1 driver an outlet, but it will also avoid all those particulates spewed by diesel trucks on the highways.

Volvo recalling 42,000 XC90s

Volvo has revealed that it's recalling 42,000 XC90 SUVs to inspect a suspect battery switch. Only North American vehicles had this switch, which apparently creates the risk of short circuits if the jack handle comes into contact with it. Volvo seems particularly concerned that this could happen on vehicles that were serviced by technicians in such a way that the potential for a short circuit was created. The recall is only for the 2005 Volvo XC90, though. Volvo dealers will check the recalled cars and slap a sticker on them somewhere to instruct future service technicians how to avoid the risk of a short circuit. Apparently it's a preemptive strike by Volvo, as there haven't been any reports of short circuiting so far.

In So. Cal.? Drive the new Impreza WRX on August 11th

Bentley booming in first half of '07

First half sales reports have been rolling in and it looks like things are just peachy for the crew at Crewe. Bentley is reporting increased sales for the fourth year in a row. Sales were up nearly 19 percent compared to first-half '06, meaning 5,600 individuals called themselves new Bentley owners in the past six months. During that time, the company had its best month ever, delivering 1,200 Bentleys in March alone. Thanks in large part to the GTC and the new Brooklands, things are indeed good at Bentley, and its fortunes don't seem to be slowing down any time soon. Being the ride of choice for jewelry thieves and setting ice speed records didn't seem to hurt either. The brief press release is after the jump. Read on to find out about a turnover that was tagged at 739 million Euro, which seems awfully spendy for a pastry, and an operating profit of 85 million Euro.

Aston Martin offering Sirius Radio with lifetime subscription

Beginning this August, Aston Martin V8 Vantage and DB9 buyers will start getting Sirius - as in Sirius Satellite Radio. It will be available as a factory installed option, and better yet - drumroll please - it will come with a lifetime subscription to the service. That would normally run you about $500. Maybe not a huge deal on a six-figure automobile, but every little bit counts, right? And you'll also never worry about that $12.95 monthly bill should your fortunes ever reverse. It's a nice little touch that might push some buyers into pulling the trigger, but will more likely come as a pleasant surprise when they find out about the bonus in the deal.

H&R drops the Audi A5/S5, before you can even buy one

Even though the Audi A5 and S5 won't be available until spring of '08, H&R, purveyors of all things sprung and stiff, have announced the availability of lowering springs for both models. When you do finally get your hands on Audi's newest hotness, you'll be able to choose a drop of 10-35 mm, depending on the package. Additionally, you can push your 18- or 19-inch rolling stock out with a set of aluminum wheel spacers sized between 6mm and 60 mm, and H&R has announced the development of a full coilover setup and anti-roll bars. Ford Fiesta Crossroad not for offroad

Does anyone really think the world needs another tiny hatchback posing as a sport-ute? We were hoping nobody did, but apparently some guys over at Ford Europe thought this was a good idea. And so they've rolled out the Fiesta Crossroad.
We'll preemptively answer your first question in the negative: it does not have all-wheel-drive, or any real off-road equipment to speak of over the standard Fiesta. It comes down basically to some body cladding: the very worst kind of product engineering. The Fiesta Crossroad might look taller or higher off the road than its standard counterpart, but alas, it's all an illusion.
For an approximately one-thousand-euro premium, buyers get new bumpers, wheel arches and lower door panels in a contrasting shade, some roofr ails and (ooh, get this) special floor mats. We'd venture that the latter was to prevent getting mud all over the interior when the poseur driver mistakenly tries to tackle a dirt road only to get stuck like any ordinary car.

Bring the Toys! Nissan's new Dualis, Skyline die-cast cars

Nissan's got a good thing going with its official shop, which actually does sell some pretty cool stuff. In addition to all the execu-type items (like leather goods and pens), branded wearables, and miscellaneous tchotchkies, they have a nice selection of die-cast cars. This week, two new ones were added to the roster: the Dualis crossover (Qashquai in Europe), and V36 Skyline sedan (a.k.a. Infiniti G35). Both cars are offered in 1/43 scale in a selection of factory paint colors. The detailing, as you'll see in the attached gallery, is pretty good, too. They're priced at ¥2,900 (around $24 bucks before shipping).They join a raft of other cars in the automaker's die-cast stable, like the Fairlady Z, Cube, and several others. Collectors who browse the website should be sure to click on the Gr.A Skyline GT-R banner/button, as the first three in a series of six 1/18 scale die-cast Group A Skyline GT-R racers are available as well. At ¥13,000 yen (around $108 USD, not including shipping), they're not cheap, but they are cool.
